For the bodybuilder, dumbbells are better IMO. More focus on symettry, more stress on the lateral head. Also the form is easier to get down.
both are good though. I started out with a barbell for a few months, plateaued hard then switched to db's for a few months, now I'm alternating the two.new log: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?p=690964161#post690964161

I agree--alternate between the two. There's no reason you have to do only one or the other. You could focus on one of the two for a few months at a time, then go back to the other. Also, always work shoulders before you work biceps / triceps.
I find it reduces the chance for an injury (getting a big pump on your biceps then doing shoulders is a recipe for failure due to the increased tightness of the shoulder capsule during a major pump). If you're young you wont notice, but if you're older or if you've ever had shoulder problems, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

Definitely use dumbells. Like many people here I like to alternate between the two, but most of the time I always stick to dumbells, just because when you use a barbell you don't know if your right delt or left delt is working harder than the other, so using a dumbell really helps to bring out the symmetry in your body due to equal wait on both sides. Just remember to constantly critique your own form, leave your ego at the door.
