I'm always hearing about guys that have gone from being skinny to bodybuilder. Does anyone know of anybody that has gone frome obese to bodybuilder; and what steps did they take? Did they lose the excess fat first then build lean muscle or simultaneously? I'm kind of starting late. I am 43.

This may motivate you. This pic is actually flattering believe it or not, but this is what happens after almost a year away from the gym and too many cheeseburgers. This is me at around 240 lbs in December, and the pic below that is 10 months later at 180 lbs. I actually went straight into caloric deficit when I got back into the gym and dieted for 10 months really. Muscle memory I guess.

You certainly can do it! I started late myself and had to drop a lot of fat before taking the stage. One of the best decisions I've ever made!

Most definitely. You're not too old, don't worry about that. I was pushing 300 and then slashed down to 165 over 15 months. Now I'm just off a year-long clean bulk and prepping for my first contest. The link to my log is in my sig, or check out my BodySpace.

Which explains all your awesome food threads Its like those who have a struggled with weight, depression, and especially binge eatting have a crazy obsession with food. Ironically enough thats how I deal with it. Not saying thats how you have but I know it helps me.
I love this thread alot. Very inspirational

I'm very impressed, but I'd love to ask you a question: how did you deal with saggy/excess skin? I'm a ballroom dancer and would like to lose weight to look good in future dance costumes, but I'm PETRIFIED to look worse skinny than I would obese. I don't want to have surgery, but I don't want flaps of skin swinging around as I do a jive either!

I was 350 pounds and 135 pounds on stage when I competed. Bodybuilding saved my life. Feel free to check out my blog! Saggy skin unfortunately is a necessary evil but I'll tell you what... I can deal with the payments I have to make from having the skin removed because I'm ALIVE! I can finally breathe and some saggy skin can always be dealt with.Started at 350 pounds and 65% body fat

It has definitely been done numerous times! I was chubby myself in high school (although not obese), but off the top of my head IFBB pro Evan Centopani was obese in his younger years before picking up bbing in his teens!
