There is no difference, you still pay your monthly bills as usual. The only advantages is you can get a new phone provider without paying any cancellation fees since you're no longer on contract. You can also get a new phone for free or at a really low price for a 2 year extension.

My personal phone that is on a separate company plan is about to expire aswell. Hopefully it doesn't aware via bill or anything because the company is paying for it

Ya you just get put on a month-to-month bill basically and you can cancel whenever you want... You can start a new contract with them if you want a new phone at contract pricing or whatever...

When my 2 year contract ended nothing changed. It's like I still had a plan (just payed month to month) until I switched to ATT and didn't have to pay anything. I had Verizon, but I assume it's all the same.

When I was with AT&T, I was off the two year contract and went month-to-month (can cancel at anytime).

You will be month to moth but the cell phone company will hound you to upgrade because they want to lock you into a contract again.
