Wow didnt realize how much hook grip can help. 2nd time doing it i could do a 275 dead with one hand of course, whereas i can do only ~200 with regular grip. With alternate grip i can hold 585 for 10-15 seconds..
sorry im rambling, but i was wondering if doing alternative grip with a hook grip will be even stronger than regular alternitive?

BRO, I WOULD STICK WITH THE ALTERNATE GRIP. YOU SAID IT YOURSELF, YOU CAN HOLD ONTO 585 FOR 10-15 SECONDS. WELL, SINCE WHEN DOES A DEADLIFT REP EVER GO PAST 10 SECONDS? LOL!! YOU'RE GOOD TO GO BRO, IMO YOU DON'T NEED THE HOOK GRIP

I've always wondered this too, but never wanted to waste a heavy deadlift attempt trying.
In any case though, a hook grip in the prone hand would place the bar higher in the palm, whereas in the supinated hand the bar would lie across the fingers. This would create a slant in the bar. I don't know, though, like I said I never tried it.I'm weak, but I'm working on it.

I have tried hook grip with reverse grip and all I can say is it does not work. The underhand grip is much weaker when you attempt a hook grip. If you would like to experience this for yourself in a safe manner do some heavy shrugs with the bar over a safety bar while performing the grip and when you drop the weight it will only fall a couple of inches and won't make a ton of racket. Stick to either reverse grip or hook grip.

Hickson is actually correct. Mixed grip isn't exactly nice on your shoulder socket either.
That said, nothing wrong with it in moderation and in balance, unless you have no issues hooking or double overhanding everything you can lift.Koyongi: I am going to accomplish this by following a haphazard training system, and forging elite fitness.

if you can get proficient in a hook grip it is good down the road, so you can keep a double overhand on your pulls. Not only is it the most secure grip (once you toughened it up a bit), but you are much less likely to hurt a bicep lifting. I always hated on people who used that excuse, until I strained both biceps last year. doh!

It isn't nice on your shoulders at all. I haven't deadlifted in a while. I know that sounds like blasphemy but I've been dealing with a messed up groin and hamstrings. The good news is that now I get a chance to rebuild, and rebuild my form.
So what do guys who use hook grip do? Use straps most of the time or should I use mixed grip as often as possible to get used to it?

I used straps a lot...not latley though just feel like being a basA$$ honestly.....deadlift and cleans and snatches I use hook on......usually after 405 on dl's I will go to hook for any pulls after that.....Vincent urbank did 820 with a hook grip there is a vid on youtube...he is the one doing the 500x20 in the 20 rep dead thread.

Didn't Misha pull 900+ with a hook?
After like two or three days. The first day it was hellish, I couldn't lift more than 80kg. Next two days I just did everything with it and after that it didn't hurt anymore. I only use it during my Olympic Lifts though but am considering using it for my Deadlift also.Eternal Gym Rat, Student Physical Therapist. None of my post content should be taken as medical advice.
