Too much protein is bad for the kidneys, but I believe that having double your weight in protein is not bad. Also, taking in water I believe helps reduce the risk factor, I'm not sure though.

Recent trends in weight loss diets have led to a substantial increase in protein intake by individuals. As a result, the safety of habitually consuming dietary protein in excess of recommended intakes has been questioned. In particular, there is concern that high protein intake may promote renal damage by chronically increasing glomerular pressure and hyperfiltration. There is, however, a serious question as to whether there is significant evidence to support this relationship in healthy individuals. In fact, some studies suggest that hyperfiltration, the purported mechanism for renal damage, is a normal adaptative mechanism that occurs in response to several physiological conditions. This paper reviews the available evidence that increased dietary protein intake is a health concern in terms of the potential to initiate or promote renal disease. While protein restriction may be appropriate for treatment of existing kidney disease, we find no significant evidence for a detrimental effect of high protein intakes on kidney function in healthy persons after centuries of a high protein Western diet.

No, it's not the protein, but excess protein gets turned into carbohydrates by a process called transamination (that might be something else), and one of the by-products is something called urea, which is poisonous to the body.

We just had this discussion in class, he's right OP

but i doubt you're getting what's too much. stay withith 1-1.5 grams per pound and that should be ok.

And drink plenty of water, without enough water it will definieley put strain on the kidneys.

Yeah, but don't drink too much, it can be bad for you, it upsets the diffusion process's within the body, but just drink the recommended daily amount.

Well you could 'drown' for one, but you have to drink a sh!t ton of water for anything bad to happen to you.

Yeah, but some people actually drink 3 litres within 1 hour then think "right, that's my daily water intake done for the day".

Japanese used to kill people by forcing them to drink too much water... Bastards.

I've heard to eat eat/drink protein is fine, but you have to have enough water. I am not sure about the whole kidney thing, but I've heard too much of protein is bad.. But so is too much of anything.

Protein gets broken down into amino acids, then turned into the types of protein needed, in the kidneys, and also turned into carbohydrates, leaving a byproduct of urea.

Urea being similar to ammonia which is acidic which can cause damage to the kidneys.

Moral of the story, use a condom.

No wait, drink a lot of water.

    Yeah, that's it.

I change my answer. Apparently urea is not acidic. Damn, I left my notes at home. I'll post later why too much protein is bad for the kidneys..
