My bro is an E5 in the Navy and he gets 1700 a month housing allowance on top of his salary and gets to keep anything he doesn't spend. He just bought a brand new GMC terrain /shrug

What you seeing there is just our base salary. That doesn't include BAS and BAH. Depending on where you are stationed, you can get from 600-2000$(roughly) for housing allowance monthly. And you get more if you are married or have children. And that BAH is not taxed either.

So basically put, they compensate you for rent/utilities/food. The rest is technically your "whatever" money.

I think the pay is fine, only thing is, a lot of people in the military are completely worthless and are getting paid to do piratically nothing. DOD needs to get their **** together.

Not saying whether they should get paid more or not, but you have to figure in that living on base is free. That is 600 to 1,000 a month in house payments not needed, as well as electric, water, garbage, etc.

It's actually pretty good. If you really wanted to, you could get by without spending any of it on living expenses when you're stateside. It's easier when you're deployed, and making even more.

Good point about the benefits, I'm unsure about that for most jobs. I know a lot of the civilian government agencies basically have credit programs where you can get low or basically no interest loans, say to buy cars. Sucks for us in private industry, but I guess if you make the rules you can pay yourself whatever you want (or have a massive union).

Soldiers pay seems pretty low still given the time away from home, disruption to family life and inability to quit if you don't like it, not to mention getting your leg blown off by deerka deerka.

keep in mind that soilders don't have to pay the rent, for food, electric bill etc.
