    Question Push-ups for beginners?

Ok I've been struggling to do pushups for years. I was wondering though which way would help me start doing pushups? I am 296 lbs. I've seen people say lifting weights would help in the pushup area. Is that true? Can anyone suggest a way to help me start doing pushups? At the gym I have maxed out at 185. So far I have only been able to do a max of 4 pushups before I can't push myself up anymore. I know for my weight it should be higher but I live a mostly sedentary lifestyle. So which way do I take should I start with just doing pushups until I can't anymore or would lifting weights to build muscle stamina help me better? I'm open to any suggestions and criticism. Thank you

Lifting weights is definitely the route you want to take. To get better at push ups, to get stronger overall, and to live a better life style. Look into a beginner routine on this site, practice good form, consistency, and dedication.

    Build up some volume.
To be good at pushups you need to do pushups.
Try ladders to build up your volume.
    Ladders - 1x,2x,3x,4x.
    1x,2x,3x,4x.
You have 20 reps with just those two ladders.
Try to get to five of these over time.
Your are right in that the heavier you are the harder a bodyweight exercise is going to be.
Make sure your doing good technique with your pushups.
Your body should be nice and tight and straight.
It's like the plank hold but moving.

Lift weights and do push-ups. I had the same problem with pullups. Last year I could only do 2-3 but slowly I started getting more and more. Every time you do push-ups, do more than you did your last workout.
