    Why are supplements so expensive?

I honestly feel like there's a financial penalty for staying natural. Why are bodybuilding supplements so ridiculously expensive?

For instance, a bottle of a fat burning supplement costs about the same as a bottle of clenbuterol; a bottle of a test booster is similar in price to a vial of actual testosterone; insulin stimulating supplements are more expensive than actual insulin.

    Just doesn't make sense/seem fair...

Realistically they aren't that bad and they cost more because they are, on average, safer/less damage to your system. I suppose you pay for that and also it could be those products are cheaper/easier to manufacture. Also if you think about it a decent test booster would be 50$? Many people make that in 2 hours of work in their career easily. For 2 hours of work you get a months supply of materials. Its not that much. Throw in other stuff like BCAAs, Protein, PreW, and Creatine it adds but still a days work for some people for a months supply of materials. Also with actual testosterone, insulin, and other unnaturals your looking to do serious damage to your system long term.

Supplements are a luxury. If you have the extra money and want to spend it on supplements, go right ahead. People make great progress without spending hundreds a month on these products.

If you don't have the money but insist on supplements, stick to the basics. $25 for some creatine that will last a year, a cheap multi, maybe some fish oil, and some whey if you like it after a workout (don't drink it 8 times a day and it stays cheap).

When you add in all the extras, it starts to become expensive, but none of them are required to reach any goal. They just speed up the process a bit. It's only expensive if you make it expensive.

Where the hell do you work? I don't know too many people that make 25 an hour. Even so, if you have taken the time to work your way up that high on the corporate ladder, you probably have more important things to spend your money on - i.e. family, kids, etc.

Supps are way overpriced and the majority of them don't do all that much when it comes down to it. "With diet and exercise, our product can....."

With diet and exercise, why the hell do I need your product??

you dont need any product. supps may be pricey but its your choice on what you spend. plus if $50-$60 a month is expensive to you, you need a better job. and thats just on test boosters which you cycle off. 4-6 weeks on, 4-6 weeks off and so forth. that way you see the total real price per year.

all you need is protein, fish oil and a multi. you can get a good multi for $8 a month. fish oil is always on sale at stores and online its cheap as well. you can get a months supply for $4-$8. whey can be found for around $40. that is the basics. no one forces you to spend more on other categories.

also there are many supps that are expensive for genuine reasons. for example Body Octane may look expensive. but as per review about 5 years ago when someone sourced the ingredients himself, MAN Sports is only making a few dollars of gain. Even less than that since the price is put by the retailer.

you just need to shuffle through the bullsh*t prices like MuscleTech and find the pot of Gold that is still a bargain ala MAN Sports and NOW for example. In this case i have to mention Controlled Labs as an example too. great prices for what you get which is one reason theyre loved (besides the CL army pimping ).

Holy crap... wtf do you buy for 300 bucks a month? I spend 100 dollars if that.

People should try to get into sponsored logs. I recently got selected to try and review Superpump Max. Got a months worth for free and a sweet shirt and shaker cup.

If every consumer starts asking the same question, that would lessen purchases, then the manufacturer would be forced to start thinking lowering their prices.

Prove it. Until then, you're delusional. There's practically no safety data for most supplements, they're a risk that we don't understand, and they come with a reward that's usually negligible.

Sure that seems fine and dandy for someone that has a career that pays $25 a ****ing hour. But for the majority of minimum wage earners, it's a little goddamn pricey!

That's for stupid bump. $25 per hour isn't all that hard to make. $52K salaried. If you don't like min wage jobs get out of that and start making more.

It's all relative to how important it is to treat yourself right.

Even the best diet has room for supplements. With the average diet, it is a necessity. There are many reasons for this. The type of food chosen and the methods used to prepare the food both determine how much nutrition is in it. processed food strips food of vitamins and minerals. Cooking of any sort also reduces nutrient content to different degrees. Add to that the medications people take and the stress of daily life, which most people don't realize, both strip your body of critical nutrients. It's really similar to trying to run your car using gas that's 5 years old. Guaranteed to sputter and have a fraction of the power of good fresh gas. That's how it needs to be looked at.

If you ask someone "What are vitamins and how do they work?" very few would be able to tell you. If so few people know that, then how can they comment on nutrition here? They say to take a daily multivitamin and be done. Well, that is not sufficient for different reasons. The vast majority of people that take vitamin and mineral supplements are taking Food Grade products that aren't regulated very stringently by the FDA. Really the only time the FDA will pull a supplement is if it is shown to cause harm in some way. That requirement doesn't address the fact that what the company says is in the bottle, may not be present in the amount or quality as what you think you're buying. Pharmaceutical Grade supplements are the only ones that you should use. Those have regulations that require them to be in the amount and activity level that is stated on the bottle. They have proven bio-availability whereas OTC supplements don't test for that. It has been shown in published research studies that OTC vitamins often have from 0-70% of the amounts listed. The bio-availabilty has repeatedly been shown to be different as well for many studies. If you buy supplements, buy only Pharm Grade.

Remember, if you put garbage or mystery supplements into your body, you may just be wasting money. Buying proven activity supplements is like running your body with prime fuel. You will feel the difference. YOu can also be confident in what you are taking. It is worth it. If you don't believe you are worth it then keep with the OTC supplements. There is a good review on Why nutrition supplements are needed and a good product recommendation at scientistssuppreview

Take some time and investigate What vitamins are, how they work in the body along with minerals and also look into the definitions of Food Grade (common supplements) vs Pharmaceutical Grade (the best available quality supplements). The review tells you and there are references on the page if you need more info.

It's painful to read some of the replies that show the lack of knowledge about this topic. If all the people that make replies about how un-important supplements are actually knew the details, there is no way they would make those statements.

A lot of people are under the impression that supplements are magic and make us grow muscle.. Supplement companies know this so why not put a big price tag on it? I would. It's a business at the end of the day. They're only in this to make money.
