Thinking of Opening a Smoke Shop - Advice?

I have been itching to open a retail business for the last few years, and I have a good amount of money put aside for it so I am in the planning phase currently.

I want to open a smoke shop, selling glass pipes, hookahs tobacco, cigars, and some other various merch.

I have been doing a lot of planning, but the hardest thing is trying to estimate what kind of business to expect, any advice?

My goal is to have a laid back place, good selection of QUALITY glass pipes ( I know the owners of chameleon glass so that's no issue) and a good selection of hookahs and shisha. I also want a cigar room, so I can control the humidity/temp perfectly and keep them fresh.

I want to set up a small lounging area so that when the store is empty I can chill out and play some xbox or watch TV. I think this would be the dream job to be honest, selling what I know and love, and getting to work in a relaxed atmostphere where I am my own boss.

I plan on incorporating a online store as well, but only for hookahs/shisha. I know a guy who runs a online hookah site and makes $2k/month in profit from that site alone!

    Any advice?

Remember that the #1 reason why small business fail is because of lack of initial funding//insufficient capital. To mitigate this I would strongly recommend you get some payday loans with various companies like check into cash, ACE cash express, etc.

Also, since your doing a smoke shop it would also kind of make sense to sell weed on the side. Even if you dont know much about it, it doesnt take much to get started and you will see a tremendous return on your investment, and will help get your business off the ground.
They don't think it be like it is, but it do.

nice brah. cigar lounge is definately good!
go to other cigar/smoke shops and see what they have... what do you like about the store... bring all these ideas into your store. but def a place just to chill, with a few t.v's, some scotch, newspapers, couches, ect. if there isn't one in the area, you could start up like a members lounge club... pay like $50 a month or w/e, give a few cigars each month, on top of that you can use the lounge whenever... organize poker nights with members, or pool nights, ect.

I can't legally serve alcohol, liquour licenses in Arizona cost over $700k now unless you "sub-lease" a license which is next to impossible.

I like the idea for poker nights, that might bring in a good crowd!

I am not a fan of spice, but I might carry it since it you make a TON of profit on it.

I don't need to hire anyone, I already have people lined up. My best friend of 10 years, and my wifes little brother, the only two people I can trust handling my money.

I plan on working a full 40 hours every week, I want to be there almost everyday.

I want to be competitive, but not low-ball people. I have been visiting smoke shops around town for the last few months looking at their prices and inventory. I noticed when college started back up, prices went up, that was funny.

Have you completed any marketing surveys? Do you have a reputable supplier/shipper? Do you have an available retail space? What is the lease length? Do you have a expenditures chart? Have you calculated your profit margin ratios and have all paperwork completed? Do you know which papers have to be archived and for how long? Do you know the local bylaws that will pertain to your business? Do you have a plan to control theft and internal theft? Do you have any employee prospects? Do you have all the proper employee paperwork ready? Do you know your states labour laws?

I have a planning guide for opening new locations of franchises(similar) somewhere, when I find it I'll upload a copy for you.

Your reply made me realize how much I am in over my head right now. I think this is going to take at least 6-12 months of planning.

I will apprecieate the upload if you get a chance, thank you.

ID the living crap out of anyone who looks to be underage (18? 21? in the states).

I don't know about the US, but in the UK the police will look for absolutely any excuse to shut you the hell down. They catch you with a minor up in that bitch and you will get rinced quicker than a dinner plate.

If you go ahead, best of luck dude

You only need to be 18 here. I plan on ID'ing anyone who looks under 25 just to be safe.

Out here smoke shops are very common, as long as I keep everything legal I should not have any real issues.

Hey whats up, names Frank im 19 and was thinking of the same business. I live in Valdez Ak its a small town but lots of people come to visit here and theres ton of potheads put here, theyre problem is the closest city to them is hours away and there isnt a single smoke shop in the area. Theres empty buildings still looking nice with for rent signs , i think this town would be perfect to open a smoke shop its a Beautiful town , just missing a smoke shop.
