    Pants Size to Waist Size?

I wear three different types of jeans they all are 36". My waist is 38" & all three types fall off me to the ground, if I don't wear a belt. Am I do something wrong here?

I think it's fairly typical with modern sizing.

Vanity sizing. Get some measuring tape and actually measure the pants, you'll see they're not 36", probably 39-40"! My 34" range from 35-36.5".

Most guys wear pants on their hips, just below the line where you measure your waist and that is often much smaller in number than say if you hiked your pants up to your belly button (hello Urkel!)

Pant sizes are weird anyhow. I wear anywhere between a size 31 - 33 depending on the style and brand.

    Check out the infographic here:

Shows an interesting breakdown of actual measurements from different brands of pants.

Yeah, i have 40" "hips", where I wear my pants and wear 38 and some 36. I think they just say they are smaller so people aren't embarassed in our culture.
    Starting Weight: August 2009 = 390 lbs / Well over 40% body fat / 48 size pants / 5XL shirts

Current Weight: October 2011 = 265 lbs / ~30% body fat / Size 36 jeans / Mostly XL shirts (Some XXL)

    Next goal January 1st, 2012: 200 lbs / 20% body fat / 32 size pants / L size shirts

Pant sizes are very weird. I bought some 36" pants back in April that I still can't fit, even with losing 15 more lbs. It's like they're a 32." I'll try again when I reach 200 lbs.

Yeah vanity sizing is rampant in clothing manufacturing. I'm a measured 40" waist, all but the most stringent of 38's fit me comfortable to loose, and I've got at least one 36 that I wear just fine. Go figure.

Thanks Bigbear327 I was looking for a site that would show actual waist measurements to pants. Before I posted this question. Im not for Government Regulations but this is a good case for it. For years if someone asked my waist size I would look at my jeans & say 36". If I knew I had a 41" waist I would had done more about it. I have been asking my friends what there waist size is they all look at there jeans & think thats there waist size. It's a little bit like the King with no clothes story. LOL

Vanity sizing is primarily an issue with American clothing, esp jeans fyi. Trousers and trad japanese jeans are typically marked the size of the circumference, aka waist size

Vanity sizing...what a waste of resources...think of all the time and money that would be saved if everyone was required to sell clothes sized accurately...you could actually order over the internet with confidence!

    Jeans...I have some 32s,34s & 36s that all fit fine....A 4" variance between brands.

But marketing has proven over and over...consumers FEEL better about their jeans if they can fit into a smaller size....no matter how much they know it is a lie.
A diet isn't punishment. A diet is a way to reward your body with the wholesome, nutritious food that it needs. Your body composition is a direct reflection of what you put in your mouth.

Preach that sh*t broseph. I've got 2 pair of shorts, same brand/style, bought same day off the same rack just different colors, both "size 38". The khaki ones fall off my ass without a belt, the navy blue pair is comfy (can wear with no belt). Sucks.

It's been proven a lot of stores will drop the size by 2" from the actual size so people will buy them thinking they're a size or two smaller.

It's not too bad for men typically.

But for women it's all over the place.

My g/f has bought size 2-7 depending on the store/brand/etc.
When I'm fat my pants don't fit, When I lose weight my pants don't fit.. maybe I should stop wearing pants?

A few years back, when my weight was kind of creeping up on me but I was failing to acknowledge the fact, I was invited to be in a wedding ceremony. So I had to go get fitted at a tux shop. The guy measured my waist and it was like 34" and change (I'm only 5'7", and not large of frame). I was still wearing 32's, they weren't yet uncomfortable (probably mostly "comfort-fit" AND vanity-sized jeans/dockers/slacks, I'm sure) and I'm about to say, hey man, WTF, I ain't that fat - gimme 32's! I was and still am kind of a vain SOB, and the truth actually pissed me off.

But I'm glad I didn't protest, cause the 34" tuxedo pants weren't loose at all.

It was kind of an eye-opener, that's for sure. I think I started trying to lose weight shortly thereafter.
