    Workout clothes for fat people?

So, no bull****; I'm a fat people. I'm about 6'0, pushing 280 lbs. I have a difficult enough time finding clothes that are comfortable and look decent, but when it comes out to workout gear, it's damn-near impossible.

I'd like to get some advice for clothes that will be suitable for outdoor and "mud-race" type stuff, without being a complete eyesore. Because, let's face it, nobody wants to see a fat guy in clothes that are way too small. Yet, I've also been told to avoid any sort of cotton material, particularly since when it gets wet, it gets super heavy and hard to run in.

I'm not a huge fan of polyester, though. For a shirt, I'd prefer to do really-short sleeves, or even sleeveless, but for shorts and/or pants, I mostly want something that isn't going to feel super restrictive.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

if you're exercising, then what does it matter what you're wearing?

tear the sleeves off of some old t-shirts and get a pair of athletic shorts and get to lifting and running.

Well, like I said, if I'm looking to do more outdoors stuff, like mud-races (ie. Spartan race, Tough Mudder, etc), I could use some idea for stuff that isn't going to be super heavy, or baggy. As a big guy, I always gravitate towards looser clothes, which I'm told is a huge mistake.

Like I said, just looking for idea. Not that I'm looking to look "nice", just comfortable and not an eyesore.

Assuming your goal is to keep as dry as possible, go to any store that sells workout clothing. Try on anything with moisture wicking properties that’ll fit you and that you like. For example, Nike has Dri-Fit, and Adidas has Clima-Cool. For shorts, I would check out a swimwear store and buy swimming shorts.

If you are openly calling your self fat and its to the point you cannot find clothes to wear you probably wont be doing a spartan race anytime soon. If you try and you are not ready it will not turn out well for you.

You did not mention your time frame for wanting to compete, but i would prioritize getting in better physical shape before training for a strenuous event. Start by training or a 5k or depending on your current level of fitness possibly something easier.

To answer the original question, whatever you are comfortable in. Dont worry about what other people think, you are competing for your benefit not theirs. When its cold i usually exercise in sweat pants and a t shirt. When its hot i wear shorts and for a shirt i go with either something dry fit, sleeveless, or nothing.

OP is probably looking for stuff to wear that would be ideal in the events he's planning to participate in. Anything that stays as dry as possible, to reduce that little bit of extra water weight and stay comfortable and relatively dry. The stretchy material is also fairly slick, and would be easy to wipe mud and stuff off of.

Here's your problem - the dry-fit stuff doesn't stretch or conform so it will need to be pretty baggy for you otherwise it highlights fat areas (that's probably a big reason why you don't like these fabrics). Baggy/oversized tends not to look good in general but it's better than accentuating the fat. Conversely...cotton/natural fabrics will be better from the perspective that they aren't as rigid so you won't need to go as baggy. If you are going to get soaked however, that material is not as ideal as the new synthetics.

There is no right answer here for fashion and function in your case as the best for function aren't good for fat people in fashion. Given the situation...tailor your choice to your training and what you'll be doing most.

you want to ask people with experience and see what types of materials and what cut/fit they wear, then wear a larger size so that you're comfortable. your gut will probably show: it doesn't matter.

when i was lifting in college i went to a gym with many bodybuilders and power lifters. they were all there to lift and didn't care that i was weak and small. if i needed a spot or advice they'd offer it and go back to work.

people who are there to lift don't care how you look if they see you're working hard to improve. stop looking for excuses to not try something.

Currently 5'8 at 240lbs lol atleast you have some height at that weight, for pants just look into jogger pants(almost like hammer pants but not as extreme) pants that aren't too heavy and get a extra size up with a draw string....comfortable as can be and leaves no excuses. Just like a few people said, nothing will work like magic with covering up what you want to hide. Go to a store, and try everything on or order from Amazon ahead of time so that you have time to send back returns. And honestly you should embrace being the big guy, no shame no game, that's like making fun of a college student in the library.

Speculating here, but somebody who's about 6'0" is probably e-stating. I'd say he's 5'10 and 280 is probably in the rearview mirror.

I am not overweight, but I have done a few spartan races.

One race was in May in Quebec on a mountain, it was cold, the other was late June and was 85 out. You definitely don't want to start out "warm" cause you are going to get hot and sweaty with all of the activity.

I wore some old stuff I did not care about; I had some inexpensive Adidas clima cool shorts, they were tighter fitting, and a tight fitting clima cool shirt. I also wore the tall compression socks that you see crossfitters and runners wearing to protect my shins a little. The last race I ran I bought reebok shoes that were spartan specific, they had small cleats, and were made of a light material that did not allow water or mud to stay caked on, they were cheap from the reebok outlet store. (They were also handy for canoe trips, getting in and out in the water), don't wear sunglasses or take a camera or anything like that they will just get wrecked. I did however carry a few "shotbloc" chewy energy candies in a pocket. If the course does not have water and you have one of the lighter camelbaks that could be useful. Bring a change of clothes for afterwards.

Dont let anyone tell you not to race cause you are carrying extra weight , in every race folks were all different shapes or sizes and all ages. You are racing against yourself so if it takes 2 hours then so be it. For me it was a defining moment in my fitness quest, I could run all day up and down the hills, but I could not do anything very well that required upper body strength...which led to my weightlifting and taking part in this forum.

    Have fun

you can get Eastbay brand gear in larger sizes (up to 5XL IIRC), with different fabrics, and fits (compression, fitted, loose); it's also reasonably priced. Get something that fits and works for what you're doing.

Believe it or not, i went through a period of time when i was overweight, it was several years into my 1st marriage, i was 25, weighed 255 at 6' and i dint have a big frame. I understand completely the self esteem issue OP has, its one thing dom to be smaller or not in shape, untill you have a jelly roll popping out, you cant understahd how insecire it makes you feel. Baggy probably is the way to go. Wet clothes, esoecially tight ones' will accentuate the fat. I get it, its tough to get advice that takes into account something most of us havent dealt with ever or for a long long time. i have a buddy who always tries to get me to show an. Old license i keep from almost 20 years ago and i get ashamed and pretend i dont know what hes talking about. I keep it as a reminder of how easy ot is to lose yourself, my buddy always thinks i should be proud, hut if were at a bar and theres chicks, i get self consciouse to show the picture. I have actually looked right at him and some random girls and been like "look do you really believe i was a fat guy, hes just ****ing with you because hes jealous" its not fun when your embarrased of your aiearance and OP, you are doing your self a massive favor getting in shape. It is possible to change your appearance ling term if you change your mind set long term. Keep it up. Find what works for you clothing wise and makes you feel comfortable. I do agree that you may want to do work specifically to improve body comp befire public races if you are uncomfirtable, but thats your choice and as long as your making progress, more oower too you.
