    Dylan Sneed - Texodus (2010)

    Dylan Sneed - Texodus (2010)

Recorded in a rundown, remote cabin in South Carolina with a ragtag collection of capable sidemen, Texodus is Americana the old-fashioned way: It’s folk and country that sacrifices polish for heart and honesty. Over the course of its dozen cuts, Texodus plays out as a narrative about escaping the corporate rat race and discovering America by embracing the folks in the ditches. “City lights in back of me, distant as eternity” sings Sneed on the opening title cut, introducing the listener to the upcoming narrative.
Not really living anywhere since, Sneed has crisscrossed the country playing with just about anyone in just about any venue. During this jaunt, Sneed has written a bevy of songs, some of which have found their way onto Texodus, Sneed’s debut full-length effort.
On his 2007 EP, No Worse For The Wear, Sneed came across as a likeable, sensitive type who may have listened to a few too many Cat Stevens records. On Texodus, Sneed’s scope and vision are much broader. Drawing inspiration as much from the actual terrain of the country as from any musical influence, Sneed has created an autobiographical song cycle that joyfully reeks of miles spent on the road, looking for answers. And he’s even found a few. -- Dallas Observer

The press has described him as an "A-list tunesmith" (Dallas Observer) and "a sober Townes Van Zandt" (SC Free Times). Kevin Oliver of the SC Free Times said "Sneed’s songs give a contemporary spin to the Lone Star country and folk of Guy Clark, Steve Earle and others, coming out more like the acerbically literate North Carolina songwriters Jonathan Byrd or Malcolm Holcombe."

    Traсklist:
    1. Texodus
    2. The Garden
    3. Baby
    4. Selfish Boy
    5. Love You Like I Do
    6. Midnight Promenade
    7. Girls Just Want To Have Fun
    8. Prudence
    9. Climb This Wall
    10. Keep You Still

Yarn - Come On In (2010)

Yarn - Come On In (2010)

Come On In is this Brooklyn band's third release but you'd never guess the ensemble was a New York group at all, more a Wichita / Tulsa vibe than anything else, a smooth and hip blend of country rock blent with folk and somewhat in line with Blue Line Highway but more pronouncedly from the sidestreets and back alleys, places the rural postman has to travel a bit to get to. In past efforts, Yarn attracted the likes of Edie Brickell and Tony Trischka, and it's not difficult to see why.
...Yarn is a well polished folk-country unit drenched in rutted byways and hot broadacred suns, and Blake Christiana is a genuine, a gent who came by his laidback erudition the hard way, laying it all down for the audience to do with what they will. The musicianship and earnestness are first-rate, and the critical tie-ins to Gram Parsons quite warranted, though Blake is no imitator, just kindred, from another county, and talented as hell. -- acousticmusic.com

Brooklyn’s own YARN is releasing their third cd, Come On In. This comes following two great releases; their debut cd YARN and their second release, Empty Pockets, a great cd which featured guest appearances by Edie Brickell, banjo guru Tony Tischka, and Caitlyn Cary (Whiskeytown).

    Traсklist:
    1 Alone On The Weekend
    2 New York City Found
    3 Schenectady
    4 Down On Your Luck
5 These Bars Don't Look Too Friendly
    6 Strikes & Gutters

    8 Yodelay
    9 Time Burns On
    10 Final Bow

Jeffrey Foucault & Mark Erelli - Seven Curses (2010)

Jeffrey Foucault & Mark Erelli - Seven Curses (2010)

On Seven Curses the American songwriters Mark Erelli and Jeffrey Foucault match an elemental approach with the elemental subjects: love and death. Under the banner of the Murder Ballad, Foucault and Erelli execute uncanny harmony arrangements with a list of songs that decidedly expands the genre: Blackie Farrell’s dusty cowboy ballad ‘Sonora’s Death Row’ brushes shoulders with Neil Young’s mystical narrative ‘Powderfinger’; Porter Wagoner’s darkly comic ‘The First Mrs. Jones’ makes a stark contrast to the bleak beauty of Paul Siebel’s ‘Louise’. Jaunty and doomed, the characters in these songs inhabit a world where everything hinges on a single irretrievable act, and a reckoning looms
Critically acclaimed veterans of the Americana circuit in the United States, each having made a series of well-received solo albums, Erelli and Foucault team up for the first time on Seven Curses and the result is by turns rollicking and chilling, raw and poignant, a timeless interpretation of a classic American genre.

    Traсklist:
    1 Philadelphia Lawyer (Woody Guthrie)
    2 Johnny 99 (Bruce Springsteen)
3 Tom Merritt (Richard Buckner Edgar Lee Masters)
    4 Billy Gray (Norman Blake)
    5 Louise (Paul Siebel)
    6 Pretty Polly (Traditional)
7 Sonora's Death Row (Blackie Farrell)
8 Ellis Unit 1 (Steve Earle)
    9 Cole Durhew (Tom House)
10 The First Mrs. Jones (Porter Wagoner)
    11 Powderfinger (Neil Young)

    Willie Nelson - Teatro (1998)

    Willie Nelson - Teatro (1998)

For whatever reason, Willie Nelson's Teatro -- like Emmylou Harris' Wrecking Ball -- seems to exist in a vacuum, completely set apart from his other recordings. It's untrue in either case, but especially in Nelson's. A scant year or so before Teatro was released -- and its recording sessions filmed in an old movie theater in Mexico -- Nelson issued his most brilliant album of the 1990s, Spirit. Island's publicists had no idea what to do with Spirit's subtle, unsentimental, moody, and sparsely arranged and performed songs, but the roots of Teatro lie firmly planted there on its opening instrumental, "Matador." As for Teatro itself, Harris is present on 11 of the 14 tracks. In addition, Daniel Lanois, the same mercurial talent who spearheaded Wrecking Ball, produced this set. The mood is set in an arid space where a forlorn mariachi band meets the Harmonica Man (courtesy of Mickey Raphael) on Ennio Morricone's score for Once Upon a Time in the West. Lyrically, Nelson is as ambitious as he was on Spirit, and rhythmically he's more so, but that doesn't necessarily serve him as well. Teatro is a fine record with its sadness and bitterness in "I Never Cared for You" and the Spanish two-step of "Darkness on the Face of the Earth." But Lanois is one busy guitar picker here, and it stands at odds with Nelson's more spare yet lyrical style. But it's a good tension. It works better on "My Own Peculiar Way," with the percussion floating and evening out the guitars. The touch of Afro-Cuban rhythm in "These Lonely Nights" is sharp in contrast to Nelson's relatively staid and conventional country melody. Here is where Lanois works his magic; he staggers an organ, an electric piano, an accordion, his own electric guitar, a trap kit, and hand percussion all around the beat without anyone playing dead on it. Nelson's voice is the only constant, and it draws the listener right to it. Nelson's cover of Lanois' "The Maker," with Lanois layering thick slaps of sweet, melodic distorted guitar over its intro, is amazing. Harris and Nelson work so well together -- throughout the album but on this track especially -- it's almost a shock they aren't always together. Lyrically, Nelson strides out ahead of all his late-'80s and early-'90s material, continuing the great strides he made with Spirit. Clearly, the slump is over here, and the poetry he spins is accessible, profound, and moving. Teatro is a special album, but it's part two of a story that began with Spirit, and both recordings should be heard in tandem with one another for the full effect. Striking, beautiful, and affecting, Teatro is a sonic film that displays its moving images in the minds and hearts of its listeners. -- AMG

Over The Rhine - Best Of 2010

Over The Rhine - Best Of 2010

Over the Rhine is an American, Ohio-based band, the core of which is the husband-and-wife team of pianist/guitarist/bassist Linford Detweiler and vocalist/guitarist Karin Bergquist. The band originally began as a quartet with guitarist Ric Hordinski and drummer Brian Kelley. Hordinski left the band in December 1996, and Kelley continued to play into 1997 before departing. The original foursome has reunited a couple of times recently; first in December of 2008 at The Taft Theatre (in Cincinnati) to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the formation of the band and more recently, in the summer of 2010 at Ric's studio, "the Monastery," to play the album "Good Dog Bad Dog" live, in its entirety.

Similar artists include Sufjan Stevens, Dawn Xiana Moon, Feist, and Patti Griffin.

The band's namesake and place of origin is the Cincinnati, Ohio neighborhood Over-the-Rhine. Karin attended school in Barnesville, Ohio and graduated from Barnesville High School in 1984. She then went to Malone College, located in Canton, Ohio, where she met Linford. Karin and Linford were married in the fall of 1996 in Cincinnati and several years ago relocated to a pre-Civil War farm outside of town.

Over the Rhine is now primarily Bergquist (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano) and Detweiler (keyboards, electric bass, vocals) accompanied by complementary musicians on albums and tours. Over the years, they have toured and recorded in many variations. They have shared the stage with a number of fine musicians, including Bob Dylan, John Prine, Adrian Belew, Squeeze, Ani DiFranco, My Morning Jacket, Hem, and toured as "adjunct" members of Cowboy Junkies.

Over the Rhine's new album, The Long Surrender will be released nationally on 1/1/11. It recorded on California with Grammy winning producer, Joe Henry and contains a duet with Lucinda Williams on "Undamned" and two songs co-written with Joe Henry.

Willie Nelson & Sheryl Crow - CMT Crossroads Culver City CA 2002

Willie Nelson & Sheryl Crow - CMT Crossroads, Sony Pictures Studios; Culver City, CA [6.x.02]

    Television Broadcast

I don’t know if you got to see this show when it was on television, but you should track it down, if you didn’t. It’s a great concert, and includes a sit-down interview, in the parking lot beside Willie’s bus, with Willie and Sheryl and the CMT guy whose name I can’t remember. Willie and Sheryl talk about their song-writing experience, the sacrifices of life on the road and the fellowship of playing music with friends whom you admire.

Write CMT and see if you can get it, or beg them to air it again. I have a video I made from the show and it’s wearing out.

Willie Nelson and Sheryl Crow met first in 1999 when they were part of a New York tribute concert honoring Johnny Cash. Nelson and Crow opened their CMT Crossroads taping with “Jackson,” one of the songs they performed at the Cash tribute. As they did in New York, Nelson played Cash to Crow’s June Carter.

Their friendship has grown since their first meeting. Crow, raised in a musical household in Missouri, reveres Nelson as the “king of phrasing” and “the voice that was the soundtrack to my childhood.” Nelson regards Crow as a worthy musical colleague, an inheritor of his musical “outlaw” spirit and a fit audience for his dirty jokes.

Nelson played an electric guitar throughout the night instead of his battered classical acoustic, dubbed “Trigger.” (Crow said her instruments have no names, but she might refer to them as “my little money makers.”) “My guitar,” Nelson explained, “is on the way to Amsterdam [for a European tour]. I am following soon behind.”

The singers each took care to match the other’s vocal phrasing, casting sidelong glances at each other throughout their performance. Of “Let It Be Me,” Nelson proclaimed the duo “happy to be resurrecting a great song.” He toyed with the familiar phrasing and seemed to challenge Crow to do the same. “It wasn’t perfect, but it was tasty,” she said after the first take.

Jim White - No Such Place (2001)

Jim White - No Such Place (2001)

Jim White's sophomore release on David Byrne's Luaka Bop imprint comes four years after the release of Wrong-Eyed Jesus!, an album that introduced him as a quirky, yet clever master of Southern gothic storytelling and lo-fi folk music. No Such Place is a brilliant follow-up and reveals White at his best. It's a bluesy, atmospheric-laced collection of songs about loners, ghosts, devils, love, and angels. Well skilled at providing listeners with a detailed look into his psyche, White simultaneously, and almost undetectably, provokes introspection throughout the album's 13 tracks. His songwriting is best exhibited when the album flows between gentle, dark, and spacy tunes like "Corvair" and "The Wrong Kind of Love," to all-out stompers like "10 Miles to Go on a 9 Mile Road," "Handcuffed to a Fence in Mississippi," and his unique cover of Roger Miller's "King of the Road." No Such Place is a classic storytelling affair. Continuing to draw from a lifetime's worth of experiences, including stints as a religious fanatic, drug addict, taxi driver, fashion model, and professional surfer, White generously offers up a collage of deeply personal thoughts and feelings. Although comparable to Beck's Mutations and Shawn Mullins' Beneath the Velvet Sun, No Such Place breaks new ground by pairing White's unique lyrical twists and vocal stylings with the slick production of Morcheeba, Sweetback co-founder and Sade musician Andrew Hale, DJ/producer Q-Burns Abstract Message, and Sohichiro Suzuki (formerly of Yellow Magic Orchestra and currently with World Standard). The result is a cohesive effort that's bold, bizarre, and beautiful. His tales, often witty and dipped in irony, stream underneath samples of crickets, howls, sirens, whistles, and an ample filling of ******t clings and clangs. White is a master of exposing his world, while singing the majority of his songs under the guise of a third-person narrator. Combining banjos, harmonicas, and jaw harps with thick lo-fi beats, record scratches, and samples, No Such Place is an exciting and fresh collection of music. Add to the mix White's tongue-in-cheek storyteller talents and the result is a strong album that proves that he's closer to finding peace with his past and optimistic about the journey ahead.

Ralph Stanley and The Clinch Mountain Boys - 1971-1973 (4 CD Box Set) (1995)

Ralph Stanley and The Clinch Mountain Boys - 1971-1973 (4 CD Box Set) (1995)

This four-CD set is a collection of the entire output of Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys during an astonishing three-year period in the early '70s. The albums collected here include the first appearance of Stanley's signature a cappella bluegrass-gospel, and feature the outstanding lead singing of the late Roy Lee Centers.

The strong incarnation of the Clinch Mountain Boys features Curley Ray Cline on fiddle, Jack Cooke on bass, and Ricky Lee on lead guitar. Teenage Stanley disciples and future country stars Keith Whitley and Ricky Skaggs make their first recorded appearances here also, and Country Gentleman John Duffey stops by to max out the needles on the Stanley Brothers classic The Lonesome River. The band runs through straight bluegrass, gospel, old-time banjo songs, fiddle tunes, and Stanley Brothers classics, all with great confidence and style. Songs are pulled from multiple and diverse sources, including the Carter Family, old country, Bill Monroe, and even a beautiful Jesse Winchester son, "Brand New Tennessee Waltz." This set is for purists more than bluegrass neophytes, but no fan of Ralph Stanley or the Stanley Brothers should be without it. These albums broke new stylistic ground at a time when there was some concern whether Ralph Stanley could continue in the wake of Carter Stanley's death.

Marshall Chapman - Big Lonesome (2010)

Marshall Chapman - Big Lonesome (2010)

Marshall Chapman’s new release, Big Lonesome, was intended to be a duets album. But when her musical soulmate, acclaimed singer-songwriter Tim Krekel, suddenly succumbed to cancer in 2009, her plans were dashed. The period of mourning that followed has produced a remarkable collection of songs, a concept album about grief in the vein of Rosanne Cash’s Black Cadillac.

Like Cash, Chapman wisely keeps her sorrow grounded in specific images instead of broad themes. “What’s that sound/ like something falling through the trees,” she laments in the album’s centerpiece, “Falling Through the Trees,” a song so rich in metaphor that it demands multiple listenings.

It’s a bit of a departure for the raucous Chapman—who was once advised by Jerry Lee Lewis to not burn out—allowing her trademark piss-‘n’-vinegar sound to be tempered by a quiet melancholy. The result is a country album in the classic sense, full of heartache and longing. Big Lonesome might just be Chapman’s masterpiece.

    2. Down to Mexico (05:48)

Ralph Stanley Clinch Mountain Country CD 1997

Ralph Stanley Clinch Mountain Country CD 1997

Ralph Stanley and producer Bil VornDick assembled a small galaxy of musical stars to make CLINCH MOUNTAIN COUNTRY one of the biggest all-star bluegrass recording sessions ever. The list of performers reads as a Who's Who that stretches the gamut of American pop music, including George Jones, Bob Dylan, Marty Stuart, Vince Gill, Dwight Yoakam, BR5-49, Gillian Welch and others.

This two-disc collection of bluegrass standards is lovingly performed by artists who have clearly been influenced--even defined--by Ralph Stanley's legacy. (Many consider Stanley to be the heart of soul of bluegrass music.) There are plenty of stellar performances on CLINCH MOUNTAIN COUNTRY. Patty Loveless turns in an excellent version of the chilling, traditional murder ballad, "Pretty Polly," while Porter Wagoner offers a splendid rendition of "The White Dove," a Carter Stanley song that Wagoner first sang as a child. But perhaps the most memorable tracks on this excellent document of a bluegrass legend are "Thy Burdens Are Greater Than Mine" and "My Deceitful Heart," where Stanley and his son, Ralph Stanley II, share vocals.

Personnel includes: Ralph Stanley; Shelton Feazell, Jack Cooke, John Rigsby (vocals); Bob Dylan, Marty Stuart (guitar); Ricky Skaggs (mandolin); Laurie Lewis (fiddle); Mike Bub (bass); Hal Ketchum, Patty Loveless, George Jones, Dwight Yoakam, Vince Gill, Claire Lynch, Judy Marshall, David Marshall, Joe Diffie, Gillian Welch, Ralph Stanely II, Rhonda Vincent, Diamond Rio, Jeff Raybon, Marty Raybon, Doug Phelps, John Anderson, Alison Krauss, Junior Brown, Connie Smith, Tim O'Brien, Porter Wagoner, Joe Isaacs, Sonya Isaacs, Becky Isaacs, Vern Gosdin, Jim Lauderdale, The Whites, BR5-49, Kathey Mattea.

Adam Klein - Wounded Electric Youth (2010)

Adam Klein - Wounded Electric Youth (2010)

Wounded Electric Youth is a bold move for Adam Klein. Coming off the back of a more traditional approach to making music, his third album could so easily have alienated his more rootsy following and left him adrift in the choppy waters of the sell out. The fact he went ahead and made it anyway is a credit to him and, thanks in no small part to producer/multi instrumentalist AJ Adams the result is one of the finest albums of the year.

This is a treasure trove of song writing from opening track Drifter where wispy backing vocals really do drift above the intertwining riffs of guitar and organ. Exquisite use of effects never quite cross the line into over indulgence as Klein conjures scenarios of daydreaming and skinny dipping in the sunny south. And almost as an afterthought, the lap steel and ukulele strike you as perfect accompaniments to this new, lusher direction to his sound. Klein displays a sense of subtlety rare in the ego driven world of the modern music scene. This is only partly due to the fact he is master of his own material. He knows exactly what's needed where, when and in what quantity (another nod here to Adams). A good example is Griffin's Song. The effect of simple heartfelt lyrics and tasteful brass is enhanced tenfold when the lead guitar, sax and organ climax before coming slowly in to land right on cue, all masterfully handled. Brass is used to great effect to give just a tiny hint of jazz/blues to proceedings . Any less and it wouldn't provide this effect. Any more and and it would be out of place. And yet there is no sense of it being overly contrived. It's all so natural, as is David Blackman's fiddle on next track Wayward Son which has its roots in country music the way country music was meant to sound. The team of musicians Klein has assembled are all of the very highest calibre. The art of storytelling which was so prominent in Klein's last album “Western Tales and Trails” is again present here and comes to the fore in “Of Pirates and Vagabonds”, while the imagery and colour portrayed throughout the album is a delight. “12th and Porter” brings the album to a close as if at the end of a long, but wholesome journey, and leaves an impression that if musical style and direction is any indication of an artists creative perspective then Adam Klein was in a good place when this record was conceived. Even the melancholy numbers display wry undercurrents of hope and Klein is adept at extracting positive energy from his downbeat side. Classy is the word that springs to mind when listening to Wounded Electric Youth. It is a confident and assured step forward for Klein, not that going sideways would have, in his case, been a bad thing.

Shannon McNally - Western Ballad 2011

Shannon McNally - Western Ballad 2011

Recently I received the above listed CD towards the release of which I made a small contribution through Kickstarter. So, let’s get to it!

The CD starts off almost as well as I could hope. “Memory of a Ghost” combines a great tune, great singing, and a playful musical mix that suits the lyric well. If there’s a complaint, it’s that her collaborator’s (Mark Bingham) voice, playing the role of the ghost, is a bit muddied in the mix. Next is “High,” a reverb soaked song about, well, feeling good, but more from joy rather than from indulgence.

“When I Am Called” moves towards an Americana/folk style that contrarily holds fast to the guitar reverb. Again, it’s a vocal showcase, though not a one blessed with a particularly deep lyric. “Western Ballad,” the title track, is an Alan Ginsberg poem that invites speculation on the loss of love and the loss of life, punctuated by a military snare. It’s not particularly cheery, and it’s an interesting choice for the album title, though not textually misleading as her style mixes folk, Native American elements, and, to my regret, Country (or as it used to be known, Country & Western).

And that’s the musical style that we find ourselves with “True Possession,” which seems to be about finding strength in oneself. I think, anyway, as lyrics were not included. Nevertheless, it’s a song that I’d be interested in hearing with a more aggressive rock or blues attitude. The over-the-top country guitar licks at the end of the song subtract.

Next up is “Tristesse Oubliee,” which is sung entirely in French. As the CD was recorded in New Orleans, I’m certain it has a personal meeting, possibly a forgotten sadness if Google was any help at all. Despite its merits, I’m just one of those people that runs when I hear pedal steel.

“Thunderhead” would be my favorite song on the CD were it not for an unworthy refrain. It’s a lilting song with a vocal style similar to Richard Ashcroft (of The Verve); it just needs a musical hook. Perhaps she’ll revisit this styling in the future. “Rock and Roll Angels,” despite its promising title, is a rather plodding C&W affair. The timbre and nuance in McNally’s voice is suited to a number of styles – this one just doesn’t appeal to me.

When I see “Toast,” I can’t help but think bread with butter… maybe some grape jelly if there’s time. It might help if this song were titled “A Toast" or “I Toast” just to clear the expectations for people like who get preoccupied when 1 + 1 fall just short of 2. It has fairly straightforward pop appeal and is an enjoyable song.

The militia snares return with collaborator/producer Mark Bingham’s “Little Stream of Whiskey,” … with a sort of C&W “good times” feel to it. The best part of this song is that it stretches McNally’s voice to lovely effect. The nuances when she descends to a speaking voice harken back to “The Hard Way” off her fantastic 2005 release, Geronimo. Though, well, there’s that pedal steel again…

The CD closes with “In My Own Second Line,” a song which her producer says “reflects the affliction of madness to the degree that the singer is truly in their own world and in their own marching parade.” I don’t quite pick that up, but it’s a suitable notion to close an effort that finds McNally delivering a more cohesive, relaxed, and enjoyable performance than when last heard on 2009’s uneven Coldwater.

I don’t know that Western Ballad will win new fans, but it has a number of very good songs to strengthen her repertoire. She certainly plays to her strengths, with a spacious acoustic landscape that lets the inflections in her voice be heard. I remain a fan, but admittedly hope that she finds a producer who will collaborate less and demand a bit more. And, of course, one who doesn’t advocate pedal steel.
