The last of three concerts captured by the King Biscuit audio engineers for a sole Hillman concert broadcast in 1977, the show features material from every aspect of Hillman's career up to that point, except his tenure with The Byrds.

It was Hillman who almost single-handedly developed the genre we now call country-rock, and this show is an example of how important his influence has been. There is much material from his two solo albums on Asylum Records, and songs from his time in Souther-Hillman-Furray, the super-group he was part of from 1974 through 1976, with Richie Furray from Poco and songwriter/singer JD Souther.

There are no gimmicks or over-dramatic moments here because, frankly, Hillman could care less about those elements. What is here, however, is an exceptional commitment by one artist to make great music. Among the highlights are "Take It On The Run," "Rise and Fall," "Rollin And Tumblin'," "Sin City," "Heartbreaker" and "It Doesn't Matter/Bound To Lose."

Who?

We�re The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit. Our names are Will Taylor (vocals, tenor guitar, harmonica), Kris Dowd (vocals, guitars), Taylor Webster (bass guitar, vocals), Matt Cordano (pedal steel, electric guitar, banjo, Dobro), and Aaron Burtch (drums, artwork). Most of us have bounced around some bands around Oakdale and Modesto (Built Like Alaska, Fiver, The Puffin� Billies), but Aaron Burtch spent damn near two decades playing drums for the Modesto-based indie band Grandaddy (V2).

What?

We�re country, rock n� roll, folk�you know�all that good stuff we call Americana. We even won the 2008 Modesto Area Music Award (MAMA) for Best Americana band, but as far as that goes, no one really cares. Anyway, sometimes our rhythm does the Johnny Cash boom-chicka-boom, and sometimes it rocks like Crazy Horse. Sometimes it swings like the Strangers behind Haggard; other times it sounds like Ralph Mooney from Waylon Jennings�s band took a ride with some of the dudes left over from CCR, stopped to fill their rig full of BioWillie, and found that notebook Guy Clark lost in California. We pride ourselves on both Will Taylor�s and Kris Dowd�s strong, original songwriting. Kris�s songs sound like a late-night card game in a dingy shack with Merle Haggard, Leonard Cohen, and Bob Dylan, while Will�s songs sound like Greg Brown, John Hartford, and James Hand hitchhiked to the Strawberry Music Festival and all got picked up in the same van.

When?

We�ve been at it since spring of 2005. We put out our self-titled first album that same summer. Our newest release, The Ghost of Good Manners, came out in early March of 2009. As of now, it�s an independent release on our very own Heckabad Records.

Where?

Oakdale, California. We�ve got San Francisco two hours west, Yosemite two hours east, Fresno two hours south, and Sacramento two hours north. We play a lot at a bar here called The Cow Track Lounge. We call it �the office.� We�ve turned it into a good, thriving venue, hosting gigs there and playing with all kinds of friends who happen to stumble through looking for a good time.

Why?

Because we want to hear something good�something with heart�and we know you do, too.

The Seldom Scene - Old Train 1974

By 1974, the Seldom Scene was one of the hottest progressive bluegrass bands on the D.C. circuit. Their fourth album, Old Train, shows why. The band confidently kicks off with the instrumental "Appalachian Rain" before delving into their trademark three-part harmony on Herb Pedersen's "Wait a Minute." On songs like "Wait a Minute" and "Different Roads," John Starling's lead vocals sound more folk than bluegrass. Only John Duffy's tenor, coming in loud and clear on the chorus, reminds the listener that he or she is listening to a bluegrass group. The Seldom Scene, however, also has a traditional side. Sparkling versions of "The Old Crossroads," "Traveling on and On," and "Working on a Building" hark back respectfully to classic bluegrass. A number of guests help the band fill out its sound on Old Train. Linda Ronstadt's vocals show up on Paul Craft's drinking classic, "Through the Bottom of the Glass," while Ricky Skaggs' fiddling adds a number of flourishes. The album may seem a bit short by CD standards, but with material like the title track and "C & O Canal," every minute will be prized. For anyone curious about how good the original lineup sounded, Old Train provides a snapshot of a band that had it all. Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.
