GREAT post from Rivals. I've been hard on Frazier, but this made me step back.
Some of the posts on here over the last three weeks make it appear that the average poster must not have seen much Auburn football. Maybe they have seen it all but don't necessarily recall it? Maybe the average age on here is much lower than we think?
Just looking at the last 20 years or so....do you recall seeing Brandon Cox in his early starts? Remember Georgia Tech and the disaster that was? I am sure he does - with something like three INTs and a fumble. What about Ben Leard vs. Virginia? Three turnovers on 11-25 passing? Anybody? I can recall seeing Patrick Nix look horrible and the offense going nowhere, so we bring in Dameyune Craig to save the day and he looks just as bad. Some of the same people who are throwing Kiehl Frazier under the bus for his poor play also wanted to discard Jason Campbell in his early years. Campbell's mother even stopped coming to the games because the criticism was so harsh (and his play was so poor). Remember Campbell battling Cobb for playing time? I'm talking about that guy, not the one most people now remember for 2004.
And that is the point. All of these guys brought us some great moments as QBs at AU. They were record setting QBs. Winners. Nix to Sanders and the win over #1 UF at the swamp. That winning streak. Leard to Daniels at UGA. Dameyune putting that '97 team on his back and carrying them all the way to Atlanta. Cox to Aromashodu in Athens. Campbell to Courtney Taylor for that conversion, and then again for the TD vs LSU. He played about as well at the QB position in 2004 as I had ever seen...until 2010. Same kid who was battling Daniel Cobb for playing time earlier in his career. These are the same kids who struggled early in their career.
Do you think it is just coincidence that Auburn's last three undefeated seasons (all in the last 19 years - no program in college football has more during this time) have come with experienced QBs at the helm? SENIOR Quarterback Stan White in 1993, SENIOR quarterback Jason Campbell in 2004 and JUNIOR quarterback Cameron Newton in 2010.
If the experienced Kiehl Frazier was our starting QB this year we would likely be 3-0, and about half of the questions being raised right now about the QB position, offense, OC, defense and head coach would be non-existent. I can say this because solid play at the QB position can mask the type of deficiencies that exist on any team - on offense and defense. And a QB playing poorly can cause these areas to appear much worse than they are.
Why did these QBs not play as well in their early starts? They have told us.
- They put too much pressure on themselves to live up to either the hype, the expectations or both.
- It took time to learn to trust their OL and stand comfortably in the pocket without dancing.
- They spent most of their time looking at the oncoming rush and trying to avoid it and taking just a quick glance at their first couple of receiver options, instead of taking just a quick glance at the rush and surveying the field for that receiver who is about to come open.
- The game moves 100 miles an hour when you are inexperienced, but really begins to slow down for you once you have been through it a number of times.
- They watched he rush in their early starts and learned to FEEL the rush as they gained more experience.
- They found it more difficult to lead as a young player than after they were more established.
These are things that come quickly for some, but take time for most. The exceptions you see are usually guys who are surrounded by experienced players or they walk into a college system that is very similar to the one they ran in high school. Stan White is an Auburn QB who played some games as a redshirt freshman that made him look like he was ready for the big time, but even he ran into difficulty when the pieces around him weren't in place. A strong running game is a huge boost for a young QB, and we may have that at some point this season, but three freshman and a sophomore on the OL is not usually a recipe for consistency.
I'm just asking you to not discard everything that has been built largely because we have a QB who is trying to grow up. That's what happens in college ball. Guys move on and young guys get their shot. You don't have a Montana, Elway, Marino or Favre who you can sign to a lifetime contract. Frazier has all the tools to get the job done, which is why I think he will be no different than the other QBs I have mentioned from over the last 20 years. If his journey at AU is anything like these other QBs - and I see no reason to expect any different - I can't wait to see what he will accomplish.

You would think, but we MUST make a smash hire with the AD and HC this time around. No more of this good ole boys club we have going on right now with Chizik's ludicrous buyout and Jacobs petitioning to keep him. Are you in the Petrino camp? I don't love his choices, but I have a hard time finding a better option.

It's crazy how much has changed in the two years from when I first made this thread. But I actually agree with the article posted up on this page. There were times when I watched Frazier and was impressed with his passing strength. The kid's got potential. But right now it's just hard to watch this team go from the top to rock bottom in such a short time.

Ellis johnson is rumored as a prime target to become dc. Tracy Rocker's name has also been thrown around, but don't know if it's for dc or if it's for dline coach again.
Chad morris's name is being thrown around as oc but i definitely don't see that happening. He's making 1.3 mil a year at clemson, has a ridiculous buyout if he becomes a coordinator at a different school, and is being looked at for some hc jobs.
I think he keeps trooper, luper, grimes, and boulware."Audentes fortuna iuvat" - Virgil

I wish we had gone with someone with more experienced, but we definitely could have done a lot worse than Malzahn. Right now he's already interviewed and offered Ellis Johnson and Tracy Rocker for DC and DL coach respectively. Johnson fielded some good defenses at USC and Rocker was an excellent DL coach during his time here. Trooper Taylor and Curtis Luper will stay on as well, so the 2013 class will remain basically intact.
SEC schools have won with inexperienced HCs before. Richt came straight from being an OC. Muschamp and Sumlin (to some extent) proved it can be done right now. If we were going to go with an unproven HC, Malzahn is a more solid gamble than most. He certainly appears to be putting the pieces together decisively and he's won everywhere he's been.

Guess we'll have to wait and see about trooper and luper. I really thought he'd have them stay but he's leaving it up to the coordinators. What I don't get is if he's leaving it to the coordinators why is he interviewing rocker already unless it's for the dc job. I love rocker for what he's done for auburn but I definitely want an experienced dc.

It's a bold move and I'm sure he realizes the recruiting implications. I guess it makes sense to start with a fresh slate. Auburn Rivals is reporting that Gus will hire his coordinators then re-interview the position coaches who want to stay. I do like the top down staff continuity. He's setting his coordinators up for success by allowing them to have their philosophies fully. Hopefully the coordinator hires happen in the next day or two, so the staff decisions can be made and we'll be done with this turnover. I hate coaching changes.

The Tigers look like they've done some big things on signing day, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

With the way the public sections of the athletic department are run, I honestly don't think our administration could have pulled it off if they wanted to.
I posted this in the other thread, but it probably will get more discussion here:
The NCAA came to Auburn in 2010 and combed through the details. They came up with nothing. You can either believe Auburn is above Ohio State, USC, Alabama, ect on the NCAA's "Don't punish them because we need them to be good list", Auburn's leadership (who most Auburn fans think are inept morons) orchestrated a massively successful coverup or there wasn't anything there. You have to choose.
Two points for your consideration:
1. Every iteration of the massive cheating conspiracy story at Auburn has lasted half the time or less of its predecessor. These stories come out, holes get poked in them and then they go away.
2. Not only has nothing ever come of it, but the NCAA actively defended Auburn's innocence in public. The NCAA is held accountable for their decisions, so the those weren't done lightly.
My guess is this story won't even be getting discussed on air in 48 hours. It's sensationslist journalism and sloppy, sensationist journalism to boot. There is no point to point flow of facts that ends with a conclusion. It touches hot topics like paying players, grade changing, covering up wrongdoing, racism and never really does anything with it. It has no identity. Throw in the contradictions and logical disconnects and it isn't all that impressive of an article.
Just my two cents.

Big game at TAMU next weekend. Strong team in a hard environment, but they look beatable. A Malzahn signature win and some payback for last year would be perfect. Our biggest problem is who spies JFF. I think our ends can play outside contain, but do we have the LB talent to match up over the middle.
