Foreigners are generally considered soft targets by criminals, it happened all the time in LA as well, and it was not race-related. When I went to USC, the neighborhood around was predominantly Mexican. Indians and whites got mugged all the time, and it had nothing to do with racism. But when a native gangbanger sees a white person or Indian, or Asian, he probably knows they are a lower risk target than a fellow Hispanic or black, because they are not from the hood and they are not likely to be carrying weapons.

Luckily, despite my Indian descent, I looked like a skinny Mexican gangbanger, so I would walk in the streets freely at 2am. But a few of my very Indian looking or pasty white friends got mugged.

I don't know whether the Aussie bashings are similar, but they could be.

A bit over hyped I think here in Perth there are heaps of Indians many are security guards and taxi drivers etc and keep to them selves not really much hate aimed towards them.

not sure if srs. Even in the US, it is pretty hard for non-citizens to possess firearms, you basically have to get a hunting license and then you can buy a long gun. Not many people are going to carry a long gun wherever they go.
