What happens if a nuke goes off in space? Does the blast just continue forever?

How fast would it travel, speed of light? Imagine one day if a nuke wave from space just one day destoryed earth in a blink of an eye because some alien on another planet had set one off..

I wouldnt say its a nuke. I dont believe it is a nuclear blast of uranium/platonium. I thought it was more of a huge fire of compounds burning. Not really a blast. Its attached in a ball because of gravity. But what if there was a blast in open space where there wasnt a gravitational pull and it just continued in its circular blast until it collided with the earth

itll be like one very tiny big bang and the particles would be become parts of planets, stars and space dust.

What would break it down? There is nothing in space, no matter, no friction.

It would continue in its direction forever until it collides with something.

Its strength wouldnt decay, I dont believe, because it isnt being slowed by resistance.

You know OP, when you have absolutely no clue of what is going and someone points it out to you, you shouldn't start arguing against them. Maybe use Wiki to educate yourself (using the information pointed out to you by the said person) before opening your mouth.

    Kthxbye

I think thats right answer. It would start off very concentrated but as it progressed through space its density would be stretched so thin that it wouldn't be significant once it does finally collide.

    called a gamma burst.

and they do happen from time to time. If one were to occur within a few thousand light years directed at Earth, our ozone layer would fry up.

Does not happen due to aliens exploding nukuler weapons

Discovery had something on this time ago, like 8 years ago. When two stars collide it releases one massive gamma ray the ray would never really dissipate and would destroy anything in its path. Pretty crazy shiet, brb searching the interwebz for this ep.

Thanks, reading about this now...What i was looking for. Seems to be created when a star collapes and a blackhole is formed which creates a narrow beam of fission that results in a shot of light/radiation that can be observed billions of light years away.

If it is around the earth the blast causes a very large scale EMP (HEMP) to shower down over earth (like the size of half the US). Even very small nukes can fry electrical equipment on the ground and have taken out street lights in Hawaii before. The HEMP also causes surges in power lines that can overload the infrastructure.
Don't take life too seriously. You'll never get out of it alive.

a nuke doesnt need oxygen to be a nuke. It only creates fire because it happends on earth and there is oxygen. a nuke is still a nuke with the same power, regardless of oxy is present or not

that makes sense, gravity is still pulling it back down and therefore it cant really continue in its original direction forever, as long as it doesnt have friction. newtons law.

Such fission weapons are commonly referred to as atomic bombs or atom bombs (abbreviated as A-bombs), though their energy comes specifically from the nucleus of the atom.

In physics, nuclear fission is a process where a large atomic nucleus (such as uranium) is split into two smaller particles.

people are so quick to tell people to shut up, your dumb, your an idiot, on here,,,instead of taking a cool thought and thinking about it and learning about it, we just downplay on each other. its holding us back brahs

    http://journals.cambridge.org/action...ine&aid=240775

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) produce a flux of radiation detectable across the observable Universe. A GRB within our own galaxy could do considerable damage to the Earth's biosphere; rate estimates suggest that a dangerously near GRB should occur on average two or more times per billion years. At least five times in the history of life, the Earth has experienced mass extinctions that eliminated a large percentage of the biota. Many possible causes have been documented, and GRBs may also have contributed. The late Ordovician mass extinction approximately 440 million years ago may be at least partly the result of a GRB. A special feature of GRBs in terms of terrestrial effects is a nearly impulsive energy input of the order of 10 s. Due to expected severe depletion of the ozone layer, intense solar ultraviolet radiation would result from a nearby GRB, and some of the patterns of extinction and survivorship at this time may be attributable to elevated levels of UV radiation reaching the Earth. In addition, a GRB could trigger the global cooling which occurs at the end of the Ordovician period that follows an interval of relatively warm climate. Intense rapid cooling and glaciation at that time, previously identified as the probable cause of this mass extinction, may have resulted from a GRB.

so i guess to my original point, for something to travel millions of light years and still maintain its concentrated force it would have had to been caused by something much more significant than just an alien fighting another alien starship using nuke warheads in space
