Today at the gym I was bench pressing, and this guy told me that I shouldn't bring it all the way to my chest because, in his words, "You're killing your shoulders and I guaruntee you'll need surgery on them in a few years." I've always bench pressed to just barely touch my chest and had no problems...was this guy full of s*** or what?

I stop about an inch above for several reasons. For one, my range of motion would doesnt really allow me to go all the way down, and for to, you really get more out of the exercise if you stop an inch or two above, because you have to stop the downward momentum completly, instead of your chest taking any of it.

no, benching with proper form, just dont have the ROM to fully touch.
again, all about momentum, doesnt take a genius to figure it out.
doesnt it piss you off bench you see someone bouncing off chest? Same thing, just to a lesser degree, touching chest helps you in your lift.Need a bit of change for sups? This is what I use, and its totally legit.

its really not considered a full rep if you dont touch your chest. its not like were talking about setting it down on your chest. just sayin touching it. so saying not touching the chest is better is almost like saying 1/2 squat is better than a full legit squat or even saying its equal. so if you go all the way down on a squat does that mean your just bouncing the weight up therefor 1/2 squat is better? every inch counts (thats what she said). bottom line: bringing down all the way > bringing it down an inch away.
