Does it make any difference if I drink the shake during my workout or straight after it? I always see people come in the gym with a shake and drink it in between exercises. Which is better?

I drink it after. Are you sure they're drinking protein? A lot of people in my gym drink between lifts, but it's either size on or BCAA's.

Whatever you prefer. It won't be a big enough difference to really go out of your way.
Many avoid protein as it upsets their stomach while actually working out.-

I've started doing half before and half after and I seem to be less fatigued when I finish. No way I could do during though.

Based on Layne Norton's advice (My fav Natural BBer and nutritional P.H.D...) do BOTH! Take a Protein/Dextrose shake halfway through your workout and either another shake directly afterward or a meal with low GI carbs to combat the "low" spike of the high GI dextrose.
Dextrose spikes insulin, and insulin assists the absorption of protein.
Pre workout, you should have a low GI meal approximately 1.5 hours before your workout."Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths." - Arnold Schwarzeneggar

I take mine after the workout. Its better on the stomach and it tastes good so its like something to drink while I rest and chill.

I prefer mine after as well. I do not ingest anything during my workout.
Bodybuilding is 60% training and 50% diet. Yes that adds up to 110%, because that's what you should be giving it. Change the inside, and the physique will follow.

I see a guy at my gym every day open up a pack of "Animal Pack" Vitamins and take them at the water fountain. I just laugh to myself.

jdjprimer19 why should one not consume BCAA's intra or pre-workout?
Op: I'm assuming that the stuff in the shaker is not protein and prolly a BCAA product or a pre-working or both.
I never heard of drinking protein while working out. I guess there isn't anything wrong with it, but i would guess it would upset my stomach. I think most people, including myself, drink a shake post workout.

Research has shown BCAA's (BCAA products like Xtend, Purple Wrath, etc) to be a worthless supplement, but a lot of bodybuilder's see it as the holy grail. As long as one is in a caloric surplus, we obtain more than enough BCAA's from the whole foods we eat. It is just an expensive supplement one can spend on whole foods & achieve the same benefit.

There is definitely a couple of guys who do it at my gym, like the other day this guy who was benching did a couple of sets, went to the counter and bought a ready made shake, drank some of it, then upped the weight and carried on benching.
On a side note: How soon after working out should you leave it before a protein hit? Does your body need some protein INSTANTLY or can it wait a while?

I'll have about 25g of protein w/water about an hour or so before my workout. Then after another shake, and when i get home, a meal.
Only water during my workout.
