This is a slightly off-topic thread, but appropriate for the OV35 Misc. I've been planning a network upgrade at home for some time, getting four pc's, two printers, and two Playstations up to gigabit speed. To be honest, I worked pretty hard on this, and because I planned it out, it went off without a hitch, and with minimal disruption- one pc was back online in 30 minutes, and the remainder of the system in two and a half hours. Oh yeah, the wiring is way neater now, and everything "underground" looks nicer.
So, here's a non-training toot-your-own-horn section.

The grand tour... blue cable goes to switch upstairs (PS3, PC and multifunction printer upstairs; orange cable is our son's pc (in our shared secret underground lair/NOC). The hanger for the CAT6 is a reformed paperclip.
My PC- an HP xw4200 workstation. Yes, that is a Playstation2 Eyetoy atop the monitor, aka the world's cheapest webcam ($2.99 @Gamestop; drivers are free).
Sorry no spoon pix!

Wow, I thought I was old school..... lol! I just put away my Mitsubishi Diamondtron 22" CRT which was top of the line 10 years ago. Replaced it with a 27" Viewsonic flat panel and a new comp with something other than AGP graphics.... quite a difference! Still trying to figure out Windows 7. I've been playing Everquest since '99, and the new comp is having fits trying to run Directx 9 game on a Directx 11 system. I had to go to Microsoft archives to download the older Dx9 protocol. There's not even a VGA option on this computer, so the old monitor had to go byebye, like it or not! Soon to be at a Goodwill in my area for 10 bucks.
I still like playing Time Crisis 1, 2, and 3 on the old PS2 and my big CRT tv. Light gun shooters FTW!

Well, the point isn't who's the old schoolest... its what have you done lately thats an accomplishment that you're kinda pleased with/proud of outside of lifting/bb'ing.

I rely on 802.11N for all my network connectivity at home.
My house was built in 1913 so its not quite conducive to cabling. It could be done but I am not motivated to do it.
IF you guys want I could post some pics of the data noc I manage at work
this is the datanoc where I work.
we use a cisco nexus 5000 series switch fabric
we use 2 in tandem with 10 gigabit fabric extenders to some top of rack nexus 2000 series switches so each 2000 switch has 20 gigabit uplinks.
The nice thing about the nexus series is once you extend the fabric you can manage it from a single 5k console. we also have a few 3750 legacy switches in play
on our edge we have cisco catalyst 4920 switches that connect to our ISP via gigbit.
We have redundant connections that use BGP and HSRP for fail over (with both physical and logical redundancy)
you will see a rack of 5 *** 3850 servers at one point in the video, we just rolled them out.
they each have 128 gigabytes of ram with 4 8 core nahalem hyper-threaded processors giving each server 64 usable cores.
3 of them are running vmware esx 4.0 so that we can run virtualized windows application servers (16 so far), they connect to a SQL server 2008 database active/passive cluster.
all of this is connected to a netapp iSCSI storage array on the back end with one chassis running 15'000 rpm scsi drives (14 terabytes raid 6) and a chassis of sata drives for backup storage (14 terabytes raid 6)
Flex, Everyone knows its the actual sticker that gives the 15 extra HP. Just ask the VTEC crowd =)
LMAO. VTEC Power baby!
Still waiting for Hoch to repsond...
Also, I got a Borla Sticker when I bought my exhaust system, but I didn't want to be like all the ricers and put it on my car, so I still have it. Hoch, PM me your address and I'll mail it to you and you can put it on your computer too.
You cna have the first "ricer-computer" LMAO.
Once you get it all sitckered up you'll just need a massive spoiler to go on it.

Word. I just got a 27" display and I am love, love, loving it.
There will come a day when I tire of listening to 80's music. That day is not today.

btw
what kind of switch you using for your home network?
I was thinking bout upgrading my router at home.
Linksys gigabit for everything- 4 port switching router, 8 port switch downstairs and a 4 port switch upstairs. I'm thinking of putting the two printers on their own 100Mbps segment, so that I can use my work laptop upstairs or downstairs.

Dude! I almost had an embarrassing accident watching that vid. This was actually the first time I've gotten to see it... very, very cool. Then again, I'm easily amused! Thank you very much for posting that.
