How much is 5 pounds of fat exactly?

Hey guys, this might be a dumb question but i was thinking and wondering. If you had a empty milk gallon and you put in 5 pounds of human fat in there. How much of the gallon would it fill? Is 5 pounds of fat a lot of fat? I did a google search and came up with a few pictures, but not sure how accurate they are. For example... http://elevine46.files.wordpress.com...nds-of-fat.jpg looks like 5 pounds is a lot of fat is this picture is accurate.

    Thanks

It's a lot, people don't realise how much of a success it is to even lose 1 lb of fat, just look at fats and butters in your grocery store when you're next there and though the translation isn't exact you'll see it's not an insubstantial volume. You just don't see it because the surface area it's being taken from is correspondingly large.

5lbs is quite a bit of fat. The image you posted doesn't really have anything else in the photo to use for a size/scale reference, but here's a link to google images where I think the second one shows a lady holding the same model of fat:

That's a 1LB Fat Replica so I guess 5 of those in a gallon jug might fill it up or at least pretty close to it.

That's not a dumb question at all. One thing that is kind of misleading about the replicas, even when they're next to an object, is that fat is squishy and that's why we look "soft" when we're fat. I'm sure these replicas could be condensed by squeezing it and thus taking up less volume. But still, even 1 pound of fat is quite a lot of volume to lose

I think whats misleading for most is that when you think of how much just 1lb of fat is spread over your ENTIRE body, its really very small in that you only loose the slightest size everywhere, but consolidated, you see just how much you REALLY lost.

So good that is more motivation for me right there. So five founds of fat can change you a good amount if reduced from one spot of the body.

    Thanks Guys

Well sure, but just remember you can't spot reduce fat (short of lypo.) So if you wanna lose 5lbs off your gut, for example, you're gonna lose a heck of a lot more than that in total.

Yeah I know you cant spot reduce, but I was just saying if you SOME HOW managed to get the fat of one area it would be a lot. For example if im low on fat already and my body is going to start burning fat in a certain location if I lost 5 from there it would be a good amount.

Until you get to a certain level of leanness it is hard to see 5 or even 10 pounds of fat lost because it comes off by such a little bit all over. But on my body the difference between 200 and 195 is dramatic and 195 to 190 even more so.

When you see one of those 5 pound fat samples, it is hard to imagine carrying 10 or 20 of those around with you all the time, but many people do.

504 ml (or approx one ninth of a gallon) per lb of fat, apparently. Apparently, because I just googled it and wouldn't have known myself. So about 5/9th of a gallon or 2.5 litres for 5lbs.

At what body fat percentage would the 1-5 pounds lost become more noticeable? 15%? Lower?

For me, 5 pounds takes me from about 15% to about 13% and another 5 pounds takes me down close to 10% body fat. The difference in appearance between 15% and 10% is huge.

On my body that is the difference between 200 and 190 pounds. You're smaller so 5 pounds lost will be even more dramatic.

My coworker I go to the gym with one day handed me a 45lb weight that he took off the squat bar and told me to carry it around for the rest of the day. I asked him where he was going with this and he explained to me that what I was holding in my hands is how much extra weight I was carrying around with me before. It really is an eye opener.

Yowzer, thats a great way to look at it. I doubt Im the only one that after finding that you need to lose 90lbs, 50 or 60lbs still doesnt look like what you hoped and for some reason doesnt seem like as big a deal as you thought itd be at this point....But if you pick up a 60# dumbbell...holy smokes.

LOL. That is what sucks. I hate it when the scale goes down 10 pounds but my gut looks the same.

What I am experiencing, is that the first place the weight left was my gut and handles, and then it started evening out. Now that there is a uniform layer of padding on my body, the gut shrinkage has slowed down and its just coming off everywhere evenly. Im expecting to be left with a spare tire when it gets to crunch time and have to really buckle down to take it off.

It is a trick question.... under the laws of physics, they both hit the ground at the same time since they are both exactly 5 pounds.

    *yes, I had to be a smart-ass*

For example... http://elevine46.files.wordpress.com...nds-of-fat.jpg looks like 5 pounds is a lot of fat is this picture is accurate.

    Thanks
Fat floats, milk is basically water but a little denser. It would almost fill up the whole gallon jug.

You could find out exactly how much it would fill up the jug but you would need a good density value for fat and I cant seem to find one. Its a lot less dense than butter in the store. Maybe it could fill up the entire jug, it looks like it.

But I've heard that fat from love handles, lower belly and chest is last to go. Whats frustrating is that I am only 10 lbs far from my goal weight but my gut and chest look kinda same. So, I should hope that now those 10 lbs will make a huge difference to my chest and gut?
