"All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act out their dream with open eyes, to make it possible."

Please do yourself a favour and only use protein as a supplement. That means if you haven't made your requirements or you don't feel you'll make your requirements without it, THEN you use it. Otherwise food is no different. Except post-workout. Post-workout you'll want whey, which is fast digesting, meaning it'll start working on repairing the torn muscle fibers faster. So you'll want it post. As far as pre-workout, just eat a decent meal an hour (give or take 15 minutes) before you go to the gym or start working out.
Typically I eat breakfast, and then pre-workout which is usually something like oatmeal with a banana/orange juice (with plenty of water) for a good source of energy, then an hour or so later I'll hit my workout, and immediately after I take 2 scoops (30grams) of whey protein with half a liter (500ml/16 ounces) of chocolate milk and a banana blended in. The taste is actually pretty good. Something like 540 calories, 46 grams of protein, 10 grams of fat, and 60 grams of carbs."The brain does much more than just recollect. It inter-compares, it synthesizes, it analyzes -- it generates abstractions.
The simplest thought like the concept of the number one, has an elaborate logical underpinning. The brain has its own language for testing the structure and consistency of the world." - Carl Sagan
