from my understanding, you are suppose to keep the mustache area shorter....some seem just to take the whole thing off. This is to not imitate the jews who just grow everything out and end up with all sort of stuff in their mustache.
my right arm bicep is bigger than my left!

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said. Grow your beards and trim your moustaches. Some people just shave it off to be safe (hair will not grow over the lip; also this way they don't have to worry about it for awhile.

You can, it's just the prophetic example. It serves the purpose of identifying the Muslim with a unique appearance. I personally like the way it looks  .
