Running shoes for bad knees (non-orthotics)

Would New Balance be a good choice? It's what I usually buy, but I just recently sustained a pretty bad knee injury, which has made working out a lot harder (I am cleared to workout, though). I wanna get a new pair this weekend before returning to the gym; can anyone recommend anything?
    Shoulder Surgery (bankart repair)- 03/12/2010
    Breast Augmentation Surgery- 08/31/2011
    Started Melanotan II- 05/25/2012
    Quitting smoking (again), take...sometime soon (yes, srs lol) ={

For knee issues and running, its more about form than shoes. If it is really bad, check out the book called Chi Running , you may look goofy running but it does help. Also, I take aspirin before I run to lube the joints. And also look into KT tape.

Vibram Five Fingers, they have helped me go from he striking when I run to forefoot running and it feels a lot better. Check out this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jrnj-7YKZE
it made sense to me so I tried it and I love it. Hope this helps.

KT tape like, athletic tape? My physiotherapist taped my knee the other day with this same type of thing, and it actually did feel somewhat better when walking around (much better than using the generic knee brace I bought a few weeks ago). He said if I like it, he could sell me a roll on my next visit, so I think I'll take him up on it.

But just for footwear itself, there isn't any particular brand that would make a difference? Like I said, I usually go with New Balance (which I'm told is really good for active gym goers), but this was before I subluxed my knee 6 weeks ago. I still get intermittent pain here and there when walking for long periods, and I just wanna make sure there isn't a specific brand I should be looking for that might give better joint support.

They sell KTTape at Sports Authority, or online even at Target, like $12 a roll. Check oit there site for instructions, different ways to put it on depending on what the issue is:

Ideally you should go to a runner's store where they have a treadmill and they watch you run. They'd be able to recommend a pair of shoes that suits your foot and running style.

Regarding knee pain - you should try a rebounder to see if that helps to strengthen your knee. I used to have knee problems when running over 5 miles, but then I started using the rebounder every other day for about 15 minutes and I have no idea what it does to my knee, but I have no pain now when running. Try it out, and if you don't like it return it. I'm not the only one the rebounder helped either.

    Good luck.

Also you can look at the bottom of your current running shoes and see the wear pattern. This will help your determine if you have a neutral gait or if you pronate or supinate when you foot strike.

So true. It took me years to figure out my knee pain was actually from bad form.

"Barefoot" (Minimalist) running is definitely something you should look into. I've been an avid runner since I was a kid and always suffered from knee pain and shin splints. The shin splits never truly went away, I simply managed them. I also always bought shoes with a lot of cushioning (Adidas Bounce) because I was a heal striker. Well now that I've learned to run better, I either run in Aqua Shoes/Socks or my Nike Free 3.0s without pain.

Just wanted to emphasize that statement. I've had great experience with this approach even though was very sceptical about what I could learn from doing this. I tried different brands and types of shoes and I thought I finally had an idea what it was I was looking for, but ended up with something different and I'm very glad I did.

It might not help the op with current situation, that is if the form is the problem there, but if not done in the past, I would recommend letting other people in the thrue running specialty store help to find the right shoe.

    Good luck.
