I have this vague idea that if you place 1st in a major amateur show you get a pro card, is that correct?
Is there a physical card that you get? What are the benefits of being a pro?
Certainly not in my future but curious about this aspect of BBing.

You actually have to win the Overall in pro-qualified shows to get your pro card. You not only win your class, but beat out every winner of every other class in your section (male, female, figure, etc).
Yes, you get an actual card. Whenever you join a bodybuilding organization you pay a fee and get a lovely little card as well. You cannot compete in a show unless you are a member of that bb org. Many org's won't let you join their org if they know you are a member, and compete in, another org. Snobs.

Service is prayer. A physician ministering to the sick, gently, tenderly,
free from prejudice and believing in the solidarity of the human race,
he is giving praise.”

at least you didn't ask where you could buy one like one scrawny guy did on the IFBB forum a few years ago
natty or otherwise, bodybuilding federations all have different levels of competition. Very generally speaking:
the first level are Novice amateur comps...these are usually city or regional events
if you place in the top three at that, you are qualified for the next level of amateur event, usually State (or Provincial in Canada).
if you place in the top three at that, you are qualified for the final level of amateur event, usually National.
If you win the overall at a National event (i.e.: the single best bodybuilder out of all the combined weight classes) you have won your Pro card, which bumps you into Professional (i.e. cash prizes) competitions at the State, National and International level (depending on your federation).
There are no cash prizes for amateur events. you get a $15.00 trophy, a t-shirt and usually some shady offer to make porn movies
So lets say I want to compete for Mr. Olympia:
first I have to win a local event, then a state event, then a national event (to get my pro card), then a state or national pro event, then an international pro event and finally the Mr. O itself.
the real benefit to pro card status are supplement endorsement contracts for big bucks, which allow you to train without having to keep working at Sonic. It's very, very rare for a non-pro card holder to get a contract like that, but Old Supe is one guy who has and Timberwolf is another.Last edited by kimsquit; 09-04-2010 at 07:34 AM.

In some IFBB qualifiers, the top two finishers in men's overall win pro cards. Plus, the Masters over 40 winner gets a pro card, and the Masters over 50 earns one too. Plus all the women's categories, bodybuilding, fitness, figure, bikini have pro card earners.
