I've had trouble with GERD for years, mostly because I eat too fast. Recently I've had difficulty swallowing. Ny Dr. says it is Esophigitis (sp?) related to the GERD but wants me to have an endoscopy to treat it. I'm totaly freaked out thinking I might have some life threatening tumor or something. Anyone else ever had this, know about it? am I just over reacting?

Nothing to worry about & you won't feel a thing. I have been on nexium for many years due to GERD which also created 3 ulcers in my stomach as well as a couple in my throat. Well those ended up supposedly causing something "Schatzki's Ring" which basically means the throat narrows where it enters the stomach & food gets caught. Uncomfortable as all hell until it finally passes but won't kill you.
I have gone in for numerous endscopys & they also stretch the ring out using a ballon dilator. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schatzki%27s_Ring
The last one was back in june & they did a biopsy & finally discovered the root cause is some form of allergy resulting in Eosinophilic Eso****itis & right now am taking Budesonide which is a steriod treatment twice a day. Have a follow up in Oct to evaluate how it's working or not working.
Sorry for the long winded post but basically Endoscopys are no big deal at all, in fact I kind of like the drugs they give me to knock me out
Any questions or concerns feel free to pm me as I have been thru this over & over & over.
Good luck & keep us posted, I am sincerely interested in your outcome.

An upper endoscopy is a piece of cake to endure. It's when the other direction is done that things get a little uncomfortable. That laxative is atomic.
Thought to mention, I don't have gerd but have heard and read that this product, Protexid, is good at helping the condition.

Nothing to worry about it. My younger brother also have had trouble with greed for years. Firstly you check it through a high range endoscope. After it you get advice from a expert surgeon. It's not a hard trouble. You change your eating style and schedule to checkout the effect. According my knowledge I think that it's not a trouble as tumor.

I had one and it was nothing. I was knocked out, and did not have a raw or sore throat or any problems.
Actually, they don't completely put you under for an upper endoscopy. They have to keep you in a conscious state, but where I had it done they give you some drug that makes you not comprehend or remember what is happening. From my perspective it was just like when I had outpatient surgery. One second I was in the procedure room laying on a gurney, and then I was waking up in the recovery area with no memory or signs of what happened, and 10 minutes later I was going home. Of course you have to have someone else drive you home.

I've had these. Woke up in the middle of one, tube in the throat, and panic hit me, being drugged up like I was. The best way, which docs are now doing, is to just completely knock you out. This is good especially because, when you get older, they scope both ends. (and I don't want to know anything about it while its happening! )

My wife was born with a eso****us web and has to have her throat dilated with an endoscopy. Until recently she only had to do this about every 4-6 years, but this year she's had through over 15 procedures. It is a simple 20 minute, outpatient procedure, but the doctors here have always knocked my wife out completely with exception of her last procedure performed a few weeks ago with a new Dr. at Vanderbilt. However we're going for another one on Tuesday which they said that she will be put under completely this time.

I'm due for another one. Had my 1st one 5 years ago. I have sleep apnea so I talked them into letting me stay awake and it wasn't bad. A little uncomfortable at times but it was over in 15 minutes. They did start an IV just in case I had to be put out.
The prep is different now, its all OTC products. My wife had it done last year. She took Pedia Lite and Ducolax. When I had it, they gave me 4 pills to take and this 1/2 gallon vile concoction to drink 8 oz every 15 minutes. When it comes out the same color as what goes in, you're almost there.
