...however, I'm starting to notice many good changes in the mirror. so what's up with this? I eat at about a 500 call deficit give or take 100 cals. I lift about 4 or 5 days a week and do 20 mins to half hour cardio on my off days. I can tell that I've definitely lost some fat. I am also able to put up more pounds every week in the gym. Is this normal on a first-time cut?

If you're still maintaining muscle then by the sounds of it you might just be still shredding fat, which is fairly light. I've been sitting on about 193 lbs as well man but same deal as you, noticing changes in the mirror. I may be wrong but I don't mind staying at the same weight but lower bf %.

Get a tailors measuring tape and start keeping track of your body stats as well as your weight. There is a good chance you are building muscle while losing fat so you can keep track of it all with any decrease or increase in size.

I can't say if it's normal, but with my 1st cut, I dropped 10 lbs in the first 5 weeks and was still going up in my weights (I'm on week 8 and still going down on the scale and up in my weights).
Let's say the minimum weight loss during a cut is 1-2 lbs/week, if you're still at the same weight and you've been gaining muscle, that'd mean you would have gained 5-10 lbs of muscle in 5 weeks - and I don't know if that itself is possible (maybe it is, I'm not a guy, I don't know). I just wanted to throw that out there for consideration...

It's perfectly normal if it's what you're trying to accomplish. If you feel and look like you're getting leaner, then there's no reason you should worry about it. If you want to progress faster, then like was said above, either decrease your intake, or increase your expenditure until you're happy with the results you're getting and in the time frame you're getting them in

im currently in my 4th week of my first cut, and have seen steady losses in weight, although i have a much higher deficit. However, one of my friends has also joined in and is seeing little to no weight changes, however has nearly doubled his lifting (he started off rather light).
so yea, like everyone said, your building muscle while reducing fat. if you really want to see the scales drop more, decrease your consumption or up the output, but if your happy with the results your seeing in the mirror, feel free to keep it up.
move at your own pace , but it sounds pretty normal to me, especially if your lifting has improved substantially, or your intake is higher than accounted for.

No you don't. If you are the same weight after 5 weeks you are eating at maintenance and you aren't on a cut.
You are experiencing newbie gains....some strength and muscle gains with matching fat loss....enjoy it while it lasts.
By definition in order to be on a cut and eating at a deficit, you must be losing scale weight.
The good part is that now you know your maintenance level! Drop 500 more calories and you will be cutting!A diet isn't punishment. A diet is a way to reward your body with the wholesome, nutritious food that it needs. Your body composition is a direct reflection of what you put in your mouth.

Best Advice, stop worrying about it , stress can trigger bad things.
The above wont always help, which is why the ripped ABS can feel impossible for some.
If you really get worried about it, stop your cut and have a couple of cheat days(not too hard where you'll eff up progress) and while you do that start up a new diet.
Personally Ive gone 2-3 months before hitting plateau's , forcing me to change things up.Seek truth and reason
