Hand wraps...I like the top contenders personally (I'm pretty sure that's what I'm using at this point but it's been awhile since I've looked at the brand).

Honestly, as long as you get the Mexican Style 180" (they have a bit of elastic to them) you'll be fine. The cotton style (much shorter but I can't remember the length) really aren't worth buying IMO. They're "ok" if you want to wrap your wrist (and lightly around your hand) with MMA style fingerless gloves...but the shorter cotton wraps IMO don't offer nearly the protection of the wrist and hand that the Mexican Style does.

I'm sure the standard, shorter wraps have their place but I don't know anyone who uses them.

been looking to get into some boxing for workouts.

any particular online videos to show me some drills, pref starting maybe with some shadowboxing drills.

dont have a bag yet but looks fun to work on some conditioning.

Shadowboxing is fun. I often do 30 seconds of shadowboxing between sets of weight training as my "active rest."

Since it sounds like you are new to this, you may want to make sure you know at least SOME proper footwork and punches BEFORE doing any shadowboxing. It doesn't sound like you have any plans of doing any compeititve fighting, but its just better practice to do it properly.

    That said....
The main thing to remember (imo) is to keep moving. You have to imagine that you are in a fight, so not only are you trying to hit, you are trying to avoid getting hit. Move your feet, bob the head, ALWAYS keep the hands moving. Work different combinations, hit the opponent's body and their head.

If you aren't concerned with actually sticking to boxing techniques, then feel free to add elbow strikes, knees and/or kicks. This adds variety and obviously, you can create your own awesome combos.

Lastly, dont throw HARD punches and dont extend your arm completey straight on any technique either. Stay nice and relaxed.

Bumping this because I have seen some AWESOME deals on heavy bags, heavy bag stands and other boxing related equipment on my local craigslist lately.
I hope others that are seeking this sort of equipment are finding some good deals as well.

As an example, one deal I saw had the heavy bag stand, speed bag, heavy bag and a set of crappy gloves for $50.

Again, anyone is free to add reviews of equipment that they have used.

    Rival RB10 d3o gloves.
Had them for a while and I can tell you they are excellent both in terms of build quality and shock absorption. They are only 10oz and have a snug feel. The velcro strap is very strong and once you put them on they ain't going anywhere. They are quite expensive, in UK they retail for £120 but I got mine for £70. I used a couple of different brands of gloves in the past and Rivals were the best by far. The vid below shows them.

Just to add, I had and still have relatively weak wrists and would often hurt my hands during training on the bag or heavy pads especially when I landed my hit not perfectly. With these on I felt I hardly ever felt anything. Together with Mexican wraps and secure strapped gloves I hardly ever feel the impact in my wrist. The front (black part of the glove in the vid) is made of that d3o material. It's supposed to harden on impact. Good stuff.
PS: If you buy these, don't use them for sparring as you can hurt someone lol.

Yeah, I figured this would get some negative press ...especially that guys tecnique. I should have added some small print. I think if I were to ever build this it wouldnt be to save money, it would be because I cant find any decent alternatives. If anyone in this thread can direct me to a freestanding frame or bag that can take a full power thai round kick while giving good 'feedback' to the shin, I would like to see it, because I have been looking for a long time. Bobs/wavemasters etc are very easy to break or tip over with roundkicks, and they are so soft that the shin conditioning element is almost non existant. All the frames I have ever tried have been so unstable, even the british made one I had which was made with good materials was let down by poor design.

As an idea I personally like the tire dummy, but I think if I were to do it I would have to make some improvements. Matching tires as much as possible tapering at the top (smaller tires). A large tire down the bottom to give it a bigger footprint and help it from toppling over, and maybe even set it onto an even larger plywood base. Within the bottom tire I have even thought about part filling it with concrete to make it even more stable. I would also consider bolting some bungees to the ceiling.

Another reason I'd be tempted to build one of these would be for weapons based training as I train with nunchucks. This one gang kept wanting me to join because I'm pretty good with a bo staff....

Im looking to buy a punching bag for working out for an adult, one that goes on the floor not hung from the ceiling. I believe ive narrowed it down to the wavemaster the original, or the wavemaster powerline. Which should I get? Is the powerline like a newer version of the original? Or just a completely different thing?

Editing this in, now Im seeing on another site the "Century Wavemaster II" which I did not see on amazon. Is this a third model or just a different name for one of the same bags? If it is a 3rd model, its the cheapest one, slightly, but still in the range where I would buy the best overall bag.

So between Wavemaster powerline, Wavemaster the original, and wavemaster II, which should I get?

And are there any special gloves that are made for working out so you don't have to do wraps? Working out is a pain, whenever you trick your brain into deciding to go do it, you want the process to be as non-inhibiting as possible. I can think of a lot of times where someone might have just enough motivation to go do a workout on the bag, but not enough to have to put wraps on, then the gloves, and then do the workout. Its like you want to make that process of going from relaxing to deciding to work out as easy as possible.

Maybe if you used the most padded gloves, the 16 ounce ones, you wouldn't need wraps? Or maybe there are special gloves made entirely for protecting your hands during bag work?

if you are considering the smaller wavemaster, skip it. its not padded enough even with gloves on. you will hit through to the plastic.

    http://www.amazon.com/Century-Wavema.../dp/B000EZWSNS

i have that (letting a friend use it currently, paid $40) and its alot more padded. good enough to kick it barefoot.

Okay, I've got it narrowed down, I just need help finding a deal if anyone is good with that.

I am interested in any of the following bags, must be new, but looking to spend less than the amazon price. Here are the bags that would work.

    Century BOB
    Century Wavemaster XXL
    Century Wavemaster Powerline
Century Super X (dont need the gloves or DVD that comes with it, but not sure it sells separately)

The Century Bob and WaveMaster XXL are around $250 on amazon, the Super X is $210, and the Wavemaster powerline is $170, which is what Im going to do if I cant find a better deal on it or the other ones elsewhere. Just looking for any of those bags for less than $170. Really do not want to spend more than $110 on the bag.

And I could still use help on finding gloves and mitts. What are the best cheapest pair of 16 ounce gloves for working out on the bag? The wraps, it says to get the mexican ones, what brand? And if there was a partner to do mitts with, can I just get the cheapest mitts out there, or is the brand important for those as well?

Also the op said to use 16 ounce gloves for more protection, but I actually see some 20 ounce gloves that are well reviewed on amazon. Is this just the more padding the merrier, 20 ounce is better than 18 ounce is better than 16 ounce? Or is 20 too much? EDIT actually I think Ive decided to use MMA safety gloves instead. What weight is good for these? What hand size? What brand? What's best?

I think I said in my post, Im trying to avoid buying used on this, and everything on craigslist is used for the most part. Im more hoping for a sale from a retailer or some retailer that just has these cheaper.

Looks like a good selection and sale on MMA safety gloves here on this site. Can anyone recommend the best ones at $40 and $30 and below? Here is the site, just remove the space in the URL after http.
