No you aren't expected to and to-go servers aren't really upset if you don't, they get paid minimum wage so tips aren't quite of a big deal for them.
Most people still leave at least a dollar or two, maybe a five if it's a huge order. The to-go server still does everything your regular server would have to do for you if you were eating in, besides refilling your drinks.
If throwing somebody a dollar or two is that big of a deal for you then I don't know what to say besides sorry you're poor.

I agree, the tipping system is f'd up, but I tend to go with the flow just so I don't feel like an ass.
Most food businesses charge a delivery fee, yet the delivery guys still expect a tip. Why should I pay extra when I already have for the delivery?
And no I'd never tip for take away, they're doing their goddamn job. Then again I don't live in US, if I did I wouldn't tip for take away

If I place an order over the phone, then get in my car, drive down to the place, and pick it up myself, there's no way in f*cktown that i'm leaving a tip.
If I place an order over the phone, and the delivery guy brings the food to my house, then i will tip him; usually 2 to 5 bucks, depending on how much i order.

Wow. Strong tip-age going on here.
I never tip. I don't care. Seriously. If I pay them a decent wage they'll stick to being a waiter long, say. That's a bad thing, what they really wanna be is an actor.
Thus, by not giving them more money they have a higher incentive to take the risk and become something.
I'm such a nice person.

Maybe at some mom and pop restaurant.
Most all of the big corporate chains use a to-go server or two a night that are paid minimum wage instead of $2.15 and only deal with to-go orders all night.
And then pretty much every other restaurant that doesn't have a to-go server has you order takeout through the bartender. Most everyone will tip a bartender a buck for pouring them a drink, you wouldn't do the same for him putting in an order of food and getting it ready for you to take home?

I always lol when I see tip jars at Starbucks, or even at "carry out" places. Yeah I'm going to tip you for the wonderful service of handing me my bag of food. I never tip those places. Sadly these days tip jars are seen everywhere, wouldn't be surprised if companies pay their employees even less and expect us to pay tips to upset the cost for these people. I tip at restaurants, when I'm dining in. "traditional" places that you give tips to, I do. I give tips for haircuts, restaurants, and delivery guys.

I literally only tip if I get good service.
Since I've moved up here to Chicago, I've noticed that every single person, just about, that I have seen pay for food makes sure that they calculate 10 or 15 percent of the check so that they know what amount to leave as a tip. I leave five dollars at the absolutely ****ing most. These waiters are not victims, they chose this job. Car salesmen don't bitch about not getting commission if they're dragging ass and generally are not good at their job.
