I think theres a 50-50 shot.
Personality wise, I truly think he has "it". The way he carries himself. Overly confident in his abilities but not blindly. His character just seems like a star QB. When walks in the room, he commands attention.
Hes a spread offense QB whose accuracy and arm strength are Okay, not great.
After his pro day workout, hes drawing comparisons with Matt Ryan and Matt Stafford. He doesnt have the footwork of either guy, but his mechanics and motion is better than both.
Im very interested in seeing where he goes. Im pretty sure hes the #1 pick after today. Hes not the best pick in the draft, but I can see Carolina taking him because hes their best option. Taking Peterson, Bowers, Marcell--none of those guys will make the team win. They need a QB, Gabbert may be great pick, who knows.

This obviously isn't the strongest draft ever, but I wouldn't say it is weaker. The talent on defense that is going to go in the first 2-3 rounds is unreal. Especially defensive line. Fairly has all the talent in the world...maybe not in comparison to Suh, but he's a hell of a prospect.
Offensive talent is there too in this year's class. The QB position sucks imo, but WR and RB are both extremely deep, there are a few solid prospects on the OL, and there are 5-6 TEs with a good amount of potential.Karl Joseph is best db prospect in draft

No. Their best option is either Bowers, Peterson, or Quinn. They will be a defense first team under Rivera and either of those 3 guys will be impact players on defense.
You're talking about investing $50+ Million guaranteed into a guy who isn't even a Top 5 pick.
Financially the Panthers would have to be willing to say that going into the season with Jimmy Clausen & a veteran QB is worth spending $50+ Million to get an upgrade.A paradox.

They won't go DE. Rivera already said they are sticking to a 4-3 and they will bring back Charles Johnson opposite of Greg Hardy. They're set at DE for years. Peterson would also be a questionable pick, especially if they bring back Richard Marshall...Gamble-Marshall-Munnerlynn is a nasty trio. But, we'll see what happens with Marshall.
The only player I could honestly see them taking is Fairly and the only way I could possibly see them trading down is if someone like Cincy has a boner for Fairly.
I know people are going to bring up the whole BPA available argument, but if you are set at CB and DE (given that they bring back Marshall and Johnson), then why not upgrade another position?Karl Joseph is best db prospect in draft

There will be a rookie wage scale in affect for this years draft class. Money won't be an issue.
Marshall isn't coming back(it's not "official", but all signs point towards it).
The pick will either be Dareus/Fairley, Peterson, or a trade. The Panthers are very high on Peterson and even though he's a CB, there is a good chance he goes #1. Interior DL is a HUGE need though, so it might just come down to Fairley or Dareus.
I'm 99% confident that they won't take a DE unless they are going to let Charles Johnson walk(1% chance that happens).*Cam Newton Crew*

Fairley, Dareus, or even AJ Green then.
Thanks to the Lockout(& Von Miller's lawsuit) there wont be anyway to have a rookie salary cap put in for 2011. The Panthers would be making Gabbert the highest paid rookie in NFL History taking him #1 overall, is Gabbert really worth it?
Up until this pro day was anyone expecting Gabbert to be a legit Franchise QB?
Over-valuing the QB in a weak draft is how guys like Alex Smith & JaMeatball Russell go #1. Its how Cleveland saved themselves by not taking Brady Quinn over Joe Thomas, which they were debating on.A paradox.

Well the NFLPA also wants a rookie wage scale. In fact, it was one of the few things that the owners and players agreed upon before the lockout. I believe the deal will still allow big contracts, but it takes away the insane amount of guaranteed money in those contracts.

tobey reality, Carolina should take a defensive stud #1, let Clausen hopefully recoup some of his value with a decent season, but still having the worst record in the league; trade Clausen for whatever pick you can (hopefully top 90) and then draft Luck #1 overall

that's been my dream scenario since the day he announced he was returning to Stanford
I'd rather continue building an elite defense under Rivera(the pieces are already there with Beason/Charles Johnson/Gamble/more that most non-Panther fans wouldn't recognize) by adding Peterson or an interior linemen than reach on a QB in a ****ing awful QB draft and jump from 32nd in offense to 28th.*Cam Newton Crew*

Anyone who has seen Gabbert play knows he has a rocket for an arm and has good mobility. His knocks are that he has poor accuracy on deep balls and makes questionable decisions at times.

It all depends on what kind of offensive scheme he goes to and what offensive minds are teaching him. Can he adjust to the NFL game from a work ethic and playbook standpoint? Does he want to go the extra miles like franchise QBs have to?
Do I think he can be a franchise QB? Yes. I think a lot of the QBs drafted in the first couple rounds can be be franchise QBs. Will he end up in the right situation? Who knows.
I disagree about Dan Williams being better than Fairley though... I disagree whole heartedly.

Dan Williams isn't bad and is not in a good system for him to excel at all. Fairley is a good talent to be sure but I still think that he is being over exaggerated in his capabilities. The problem with the draft is that the "experts" aka analysts have too much sway over what kind of press a player does/doesnt get, more or less the ultimate form of trolling. This is why I hate Mel Kiper with every shred of my being but that is a different story for a different time.
On topic-To try and judge Gabbert as a franchise qb is absolutely impossible, some will say he will be awesome, some will say he will be a bust, some will say he will be OK, but none of them know more than the other.
