The reason Islam banned the image of the prophet Muhammed is becaue they didn't want the religion to turn into prophet worshipping, but only the worship of God. Thats whay you won't see any statues or paintings of people in mosques but only geographical designs and whatnot.
With that said, the whole point is not to worship any prophets but worship God only.
Any moderate or westernized muslim understands that fact, therefore not being offended by seeing pictures of the prophet. What pisses them off is that most of it is being done deliberatly to troll them. But then the stricter muslim countries, that is a different dimension. They just rage, which just enforces the stereo-type of the angry violent muslim not being able to control themselves, always fighting.

I am glad someone finally told me why it is such a big deal lol. (srs) Similar stuff in Judaism, but we dont have a single prophet that could be confused with God, so no such law is necessary. Our prophets were not godlike, rather just closer to god then any of us and therefore knew god's true will. It is easy to see how religion is so easily corruptible...But Mendelssohn the founder of reform Judaism argues with his Christian friends that our laws are not archaic and outdated, but rather necessary in order to appreciate gods gifts of the world around us. Saying a prayer over X, or observing the Sabbath, etc force us to look and really appreciate the world and its causes. That is why, he concludes, Judaism was more condusive to the enlightended than Christianity; since enlightenment is the understanding of the natural causes of the world, and Judaism forces its practitioners to observe, notice, and analyze the causes, Judaism is more condusive to enlightenment than Christianity.
re reading that I realize I lost the point of why i was writing that; Mendelssohn also argues that humans are prone to become slavish to texts/images and through the practice of Halacha (jewish law) humans are forced to look at the causes first hand instead of being slavish to a text/image/etc...that is the relevancy of my post to the OP.
(not my view, just interesting in regards to how you put the law forbidding the picture of your prophet)u mad i value liberty over equality?

**** Islam! I find it funny how most of the Islamic nation is outraged by a simple ****ing cartoon, but when the extremists bomb and kill innocent people, (even including muslims themselves) there is no outrage among the islamic nation. These scumbags are migrating to europe and north america at an alarming rate and have caused riots and murdered innocent people. I sense there is going to be a "jihad" on european lands. my 2 cents.
