No negs brahs, just trying to help half of the nut huggers there that don't know how to do the type of hair {alternate/fauxhawk}.
Ok, first up you need a good base...meaning you need to have relatively the same dimensions to pull this hair off. The actual length doesn't matter and essentially is summed through ones preferences.
First pic shows the hair base to pull of this type of hair-do. As said before this is preferential (i.e. If you don't like a long fringe, you can shorten it - which can be said with the top and back.)

ESSENTIALS
-------------
. Hair straightener (unless your hair is already very straight/ chemically straightened)
. Comb
. Dry Wax (natural Look) OR wet wax (preference)
. Mousse (not needed necessarily, but i use it to hold the hair style)
. Hair holding spray (more important than it seems)
** Don't get Gel**
**Get decent branded hair products**
My Setup:

Method.
-------------
1. First start out by wetting your hair, then drying it with a towel + blow dryer.
2. Proceed to comb your hair- untangling small knots in your hair and also moulding it to the general outline of the desired outcome (i.e comb fringe to one side, brush up the middle + back etc.)
My step 2 via picture:
3. Start straightening your hair, straighten your fringe down and towards one side - create a comb-over kinda. Straighten your middle/back up. Sides, you can either straighten up, downwards or side ways (mines a mixture of side + down).
Step 3 via picture:
4. Use a finger to dig about a 5c coin/ nickel sized amount of dry wax, apply to the opposite hands palm amd rub your hands together. This is where you can be creative and spike your hair, curve it etc. in different directions. I tend to get a dry towel and mess my hair up with it to make a messy-look effect {bed hair} then re-comb fringe/sides etc.
5. Mousse is an option - gently brush your hair with mouse via your fingers.
6. Hair spray is important, as it will hold your hair in place. Don't apply too much, or your hair will become too hard (like Gel), instead make it look natural.
7. Get bishes.
