For most, theanine.

Theanine.
Nice research on cognitive/focus/nootropic benefits and synergy with caffeine. AEN with their PreSurge Unleashed product utilized these benefits quite nicely in the pre-workout scheme and I think it is one of the reasons it gives it an edge over most current pre-workouts.
If it is stress/anxiety relief you are looking for then theanine alone on an empty stomach would be best... even 50-100mg works quite nicely and suntheanine is a good choice in theanine. I often use Zen Theanine from AOR before bed or when needed.

They work differently in my opinion in regards to anxiety/stress.
Theanine has an immediate effect on the first dose, however I have noticed you can build a quick tolerance if you used on a consistent basis. 100-300mg in one sitting
Rhodiola on the other hand takes several days to get better effects from it and usually it's a 4-6 weeks on, 4 weeks off. 300mg with standarized for rosavins 3% and the additional rhodiola powder as well.
Phenibut is another immediate option.

Well I think the science is, should I say, more reputable with regards to the rare amino acid theanine. There is a ton of literature to support it's efficacy as well as a clear MOA vs a herb like Rhodiola which has studies, but not in the more mainstream journals... and the MOA is not clear, while the many possible beneficial components are still in contention.
If looking for a couple possibly beneficial ingredients, with little to no downside except cost, starting with theanine and rhodiola is not a bad way to go.

I use it more for the possible overall health benefits. Well, mostly because it is in Mito Charger from AOR and I really love that product.
That's a lot of theanine! What is a z-drug? Sounds like a sleep thing as in zzzzz which I am about to do right now with the use of Ortho Sleep which has theanine... yes AOR Wh(aor)e here.

I'm looking for a quality source. Any suggestions?
BTW, I was trying to figure out a good dose to combine with my clonazepam prescription. I usually rock about 3mg's, but despite the extensive terminal half-life, the initial "feel good" effects merely last about 20-30 minutes. I'm not looking to get shut down ***** style, I just want an additive effect.~

Ironically, I've been using K-pins for quite a while, and have yet to experience any negatives like daily dependence and/or abuse. I guess this is where interindividual variables come into play.
BTW [since we are on the subject], do you have any idea how long it takes for the GABAa receptors and/or chloride ion channels to reset to their homeostatic state following an [acute] dose? Would decent amounts of caffeine speed up the process at all?
EDIT: I should have made a thread on this. Sorry for the derail.~
