Back when I started in January at 265lbs, chin ups/pull ups were at the best a distant goal. As I continued cutting, I started wondering if I could do them yet, but I was too cowardly to try them in the gym in front of everyone.
Well, 80 lbs later at 185 lbs, I was at my university's gym as soon as it opened, and there were about 5 people there. So I figured I'd give it a shot, and sure enough I pulled off 4 sets of 4 reps of chin ups! Very exciting stuff for me, like I said first time ever that I could do one, let alone 4 sets of 4.
Doing a cut, its not common to see huge differences in strength training routines, but this little milestone was great for me! I LOVE SEEING PROGRESS!!!

Good job! I'm "training" myself for overhand pullups right now with 210 pound overhand lat pulldowns. In theory, when I reach my goal weight of 210 or so, I'll be able to do somewhere around 25 pullups. I'm looking forward to that. Right now I can do most of one chinup if I start with my elbows slightly bent, but that's about it.

I couldn't do a full pullup or chinup when I was over 200. By 180, I could do a few chin up. Now I'm down to the low 160s, and with daily practice I am up to 7 full pull ups. It really feels great, and it's by far my favorite exercise.

This was a triumph. I'm making a note here, "huge success!"

Haha yeah, I know what you mean. I love doing pull ups now...I'm up to doing 15 per set. I'm also trying to get to 145-ish, also, we're about the same height

I remember my first pull up very well...it was a very good day to say the least.
When i started on my journey that was one of my original goals, to be able to do a pull up. Felt really good to be able to do one.
About two months ago, i decided to try a tricep dip without using the machine and i ended up doing about 7 or 8 reps. I was psyched!

I'm not that strong (210lb 1RM Bench Press), and I weigh 220lbs, but here's a little secret from a guy that can do 3X10 pullups.....shoulders! Hit your shoulders hard for 6 weeks, and mix in wide grip lat pulldowns and wide grip stunted pullups. Wide grip lat pulldown should be about DOUBLE the width of your shoulderblades, and as heavy as you can 3x6. Wide grip stunted pullups are done the same distance, head down and legs crossed. From a relaxed hang just pullup until your arms are at 90 degrees, or parallel with the floor. Few times a week of that for 6 weeks and you'll be a beast on that bar.
Pullups are a lot like pushups in that you just have to train that exercise to be good at it IMO.
