Will Blu-Ray discs replace DVD?
I never cared too much for HD My tv supports 720p but right now I couldn't care less about Blue Ray. I'm just wondering if they will replace DVD's like DVD's replaced VHS? Or will something better come out?

Being Irate since 1989
A lot of new laptops and desktops come with Bluray writers and as they become cheaper they will surely be included in all new machines. However these writers are also capable of writing/reading normal Dvds and Cds so replace is a strong word to use. Consider that Cds are still in use today, which shows most people wont always chose Blurays to back up their data if they only need 4 gigs or 700 megs.
You will just have a lot more choice. Replacing wont take place as long as these Dvds all have the same shape and the players/writers are compatible with the older formats.

Rep back 3k+
Dvd's as far as gaming is concerned is slowly taking over, its extremely hard to find a new game that is released that has a cd rom counter part. I believe eventually blue rays will take over the movie industry but that will be it.

I think blu-ray definitely will. Every disc offers 40+ gigs of data compared to the 4.7 GB regular dvd disc. If microsoft releases a new gaming system that uses blu-ray, then you can pretty much guarantee a blu-ray takeover.

Blu-Ray for movies is already obsolete. Why bother when you can get netflixs over your Xbox or Wii ?

Because of Bluray's space to size ratio. Duh. Show me the size of an external 1 TB hard drive and I can show you a small stack of Blurays.
Bluray will definitely take over DVD's. There will soon come a time our kids will look at a DVD and lol.

I wouldn't waste any money on either of them, probably renting them would be better unless you like re watching the same movies over.

Are you saying the actual movie is 47GB, or everything on the disc is 47GB.
Either way, once we're no longer "3rd world" in the broadband scene, 47GB will be nothing.

Possibly not a Mod Troll
Blu-ray will come and go relatively fast in the evolution of formats because they are maxed at 1080p resolution and 1080p is going to give way to 4K. Right now home displays are at a max (Blu-ray compatible) of 1920x1080, but the next format jump is 4096x2160 which is already being used by many digital camera systems, Youtube has just moved to support 4K and Apple is adding 4K support.

yeah....no.
What size of tv do you need to see a difference in 1080p and 4k? 1080p is perfect for the largest home television sets.
You all are also not factoring price. Cost of bluray is going down. How much 4k technology will cost once it is out?

But at the same time scientists at Sony and Panasonic have developed 100GB and 250GB Blu-ray discs so whose to say that won't steadily increase to accommodate more and more data for movies and the like?

That and the fact that the blu ray disc is great for PS3 games which utilize the large disk size adding more movies and gameplay to games.
I don't think the human eye can distinguish the difference between technology greater than 1080p unless you are watching it on a huge tv anyway. So the higher 4K resolution will pretty much be meaningless.

4k seems pretty much redundant unless ur making super big screens and standing right beside it

Digital distribution in true High Definition is a pipe dream. It won't be viable for many many years as most people don't have strong enough internet connections to download 25-50 gigabytes in a timely fashion.
Hard copies are here to stay. With the size of televisions increasing, and the introduction of 3D technology Blu Ray will become more prevalent. I'm not sure if people will be willing to replace their older DVDs with the Blu Ray counter parts, but if Blu Ray players continue to become more affordable the price difference between a new release Blu Ray and a new release DVD is low enough that most people would likely opt for the Blu Ray.
I'm not up to speed on 3D technology, but if it is possible to remaster older popular movies into 3D then people would likely go out and rebuy all their old movies as 3D provides a decent selling point.
Blu Ray will replace DVD as the top form of media, the main question is how long it will take and how large of a margin will it overtake DVD by.

Sony is already working on the successor to BluRay. It can store 20 times more information per layer, more than enough for 4k at a very high bitrate.

It took them about six years to develop Blu-Ray and get it on to the market. Not to mention the fact that it has only recently become practical (arguably) from a home user stand point to invest in a Blu-Ray writer and BD-Rs.
That article is very vague, so I'd assume very little info is available. But odds are Blu-Ray is a fair investment at this point and still has a decent shelf life. If you are a consumer of movies, there's very little reason not to pick up a Blu Ray player and begin collecting your new releases as Blu Rays rather than DVDs.
In some shape or form, Blu Ray will likely be the standard for a while.

1080p films can be compressed down to about 10GB. With broadband it only takes an hour or two to download a file that size.
Streaming 1080p is also pretty easy. Youtube already has quite a bit of 1080p content.
Physical media in general is dying. What has already happened with music in now happening with video.

Blu-ray will be alittle better than a niche product....but thats it. DVD's are fine for the majority of everyday people.

I can't see any way it won't superceed DVD tbh, the DVD will still be around as a storage format but bluray will become the media of movies imo

It must suck for people who actually download them. 25-50 gigs for a blu ray? I don't even notice the HD difference anyway. Only a few of my friends have blu ray players and buy movies. How much sharper can the picture really get?

The movie is what, 2 1/2 hours right, so it comes to around 5mb/sec. Shouldn't be too long before alot of people have internet fast enough to stream it.

Btw, why is it that blu-ray discs are so pricey? Is it the cost of making disc itself, or what?

Netflix is lacking in two ways: quality of the stream, and the library. eventually streaming/digital downloads will be the norm.

I believe there will be enough people who demand a physical copy for Blu Ray (or its successor) the exist, but eventually hard drives and internet speeds will make HD streaming/downloading preferable.
