Has anyone ever used this machine to do squats with?

Edit: The one at my gym the handles are on the bar that the weights are on so you can go atg if you want. That one seems to limit your mobility.

Theres one like it at my gym, on the side theres a picture of two workouts to use it for. One is shrugs and the other is squats. I dislocated my shoulder a while ago and I don't do regular squats because the position it puts my shoulder risks re injuring it so I use this instead. I use it by loading weight on the sides, grabbing the handles and doing a squat while holding the weight by my sides.
I was wondering if anyone els uses this and how do you find it compares to regular squats? (I mean how much can you do on this and how much can you do with a bar) On my back day I do two versions of rows, a set of tbar rows with the bar and a set of wide grip rows with that machine and the weight I can lift is pretty much the same.

It's not like I don't see the benefit of doing "real" squats over the version of them that I do but dislocations have a very high risk of re injury so I'm not messing around with anything until I'm 100% certain. Either way I still would like to have an idea of how much I can actually squat.

That is a shrug machine, and *might* be able to be used as a (trap bar-ish) deadlift machine. You won't really have the same ROM as a squat.

Like I said, the one at my gym handles are located at the bottom so you can get full movement and go atg.
Again, the machine has a picture of two workouts; Squats and shrugs. While this is only subjective, I doubt a large manufacturer of weight lifting equipment would suggest their products be used for anything that it was not intended to be used for.

Even if it wasn't intended to be used for it, you can still do so.

I understand exactly which type of machine you are referring to now, my gym has the same one. If you feel more comfortable with it, then have at it.

There is a machine very similar to this at my gym, cept ours is made by Lifefitness (Hammerstrength). I don't really like it for either shrugs nor squats for the following reasons:

The handles on ours resemble a wheelbarrel (intentionally) but they flare out too wide for my comfort.

Also, with the weight that I am squatting/shrugging, I start becoming conscious of my grip and have to reset sometimes. It is much easier when squatting to keep the weight across your back rather than grip it. Straps makes it better, but it's annoying to have to use straps to squat.

When I squat all the way down, atg, the weight comes to rest about 4 inches too soon from the bottom position. Therefore it is shortening my considerable range of motion.
Use the tools of the trade to help you. I use devices such as chalk for grip strength, gloves, wrist straps, lifting belts - if it helps you lift more, it's all good. - Ronnie Coleman, Hardcore, 2007 Triumph Books

Biggest question in bodybuilding: Whaddaya bench? As I've said before, it doesn't matter how much you bench; it matters how much you look like you bench... There's no round on stage that's the benchpress round. - Bob Chicherillo, World Class Physique, CMG

How much of a difference is there between your barbell squat and this?

i've used this thing, mainly for shrugs but also deadlifts (not squats) and it hits glutes hard. so if you your goal is to be bootylicious, this is the machine for you. (srs)

Leg press is a part of my leg workout and theres no hack squat machine or trap bar at my gym. That Jefferson squat looks interesting though, I think I'm going to check some of them out.

It is actually a deadlift machine according to the machines sticker instructions. You can use it for rows and shrugs aswell.

I've got exactly same machine at my gym, i hate it with a passion for deadlifts just so unnatural. these two guys always tell me to deadlift with it instead of bar i tell them i prefer the bar. It's weird to see the big guy squat 4-5 plates then next day deadlifting on that but to each their own i guess.

Edit: and the handles can change position on the nautilus one for different ROM and different exercises.
Goal - keep lifting - get bigger - get stronger - result

This. I too have had dislocation problems with my shoulders and had to part ways with the back squat for a number of years. In that time, I had a hard time convincing myself to really train my legs intensely without back squats so I got pretty inconsistent. I've recently gone back to back squats and it's been going well. If I had it to do all over again, I would have just done high rep squats (20 reps) with a low manageable weight rather than hold off until I could do full back squats.

Also, do smith machine squats bother your shoulders much? I'm wondering if it's the angle or the angle + weight that give you problems.

I would imagine that that is just as bad or worse then the regular squat. It's putting your shoulder behind your back that puts it at the greatest risk of re dislocating. Basically anything behind the neck is out of the question. I've read that you shouldn't be doing anything behind the neck in the first place because of the potential damage you can do to your rotator cuff.

The BTN advisory primarily refers to overhead movements. It generally does not mean that grasping things behind your back with your arms down will damage your shoulder. If handling weights like that affects YOUR shoulder, thn by all means refrain. But that angle isn't generally dangerous.

I don't understand things like dislocation risk, but how, when people do those hack squats, does the bar not hit your calves? Do you pull it back with your lats and rear delts or something?

post a video of you doing squats on that thing.

That is obviously a deadlift, shrug machine. If you squatted, youd be doing a deadlift.
