Did you select enable disk mode in itunes that you were using? if not do this and you should be able to transfer the songs after:
Putting iPods with a Click Wheel into disk mode
1. Before placing the iPod into disk mode, you should verify that it is charged.
2. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
3. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
4. When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.

5. Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod will change and say "Do not disconnect"
If you are having difficulty putting the iPod model into disk mode, set it on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center.
If you are still unable to put your iPod with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.

yeah. I hate Apple for this reason. I wish you could just drag and drop your songs from your ipod to your computer just using windows explorer but no, they had to force you to use software. I use to have an old sandisk 2gb player that was drag and drop and it was great.
Wonder if you can do this with the zune hd since it's microsoft?

Press alt once (windows vista and 7) to make a new menu bar appear
Click Folder Options
Check "show hidden folders..."
A new folder will have appeared in your iPhone folder
Songs in there will look like this "GJFD", just put them in iTunes to get their original names backDead - 545lbs

IN CASE NO ONE HAS SAID IT YET:
Use a program called COPYPOD
This program will list all the songs off of your ipod and copy them onto a folder of your choice.
No need to redownload your music whatsoever.
message me if u need a link. you can find cracked versions on torrent sites.
your welcome, in advance.
