Why is Tilapia so nutritionally good?

I know a lot of BBers eat it when they are preparing for a comp.

I never tried it but bought some, I am not a fan of seafood (except shrimp) but I have to say it tastes pretty damn good...

Im going to make this a staple of my diet now, what are the nutritional benefits of it?

Ohh okay, I never really knew much about food because as a child my diet consisted of basically 1 hot pocket and 1 microwaveable pizza a day.

Im just starting to learn, but I never was a fan of any fishy type of food... but I have to say tilapia is pretty tasty.

my mom tried to tell me that tilapia isn't good for you because it's a bottom feeder. but that could be said for a lot of other seafoods. don't worry i still eat it.

I love tilapia, and it is a bottom feeder but that makes it low in mercury which is good. I love coating it in a spice mix and then blackening it in a frying pan with some pam. Then put over a salad. Mmm one of my favorite meals.

Yeah, the way fish accumulate mercury is by eating other fish. Therefor the fish higher in the food chain (and that live the longest) will have the highest mercury levels. Tuna, swordfish, shark, and other big fish are high in mercury while fish at the bottom of the chain like tilapia, catfish, shrimp, and pollock are low in mercury.

that's true, but u r making it sounds like fish have no mercury, but once consumed spontaneously release mercury into the blood of the bigger fish that ate them. Small fish certainly contain mercury, thats where it came from in the first place.

its no better than any other fish. It is a lean meat source like most fish; it is popular simply because it is very cheap. pro BB's who spend a ****load on food want cheap solutions, so they buy bulk tilapia. People see this and think tilapia must be super awesome and it becomes popular for BB'ing. In reality the fish is nothing special. There are a hundred other fish you could eat in its place and it wouldn't make much difference other than the weight of your wallet.

Like most fish (I cant think of a lot that would be good for you 0.o) Its a solid eat! It taste really good and you can make rubs to put on it that is very simple and taste soooo good. It also is said to be not that fishy but I wouldn't know as I love my Sushi/Sashimi and can eat raw fish of any kind 24/7 =P

Edit: O its also on sale a lot in my main food shopping store so its nutritionally good for my bank!

That is also true of swine. Basically...

    Also, poultry, in a way...

small fish have fewer ppm of mercury in their flesh, though

when you compare mercury content of sharks/whales to something like krill, the difference is huge

Can anyone describe the taste? I've never had Talapia. I eat salmon and mahi mahi as far as fish go. I always see talapia on sale but I have some vague negative connotation with it for some reason. I may have just assumed it tasted bad b/c it was cheap somewhere along the way lol.

huh? I'm pretty sure I made it sound like exactly what I meant. I said fish at the top of the food chain have the highest levels of mercury and fish at the bottom of the food chain have the lowest levels of mercury.

And tilapia basically tastes like most other white fish. Cod, bass, halibut, catfish...all similar tasting. It's less meaty and more flakey than mahi mahi.

I eat it every day as well. Usually one or two fillets totalling about 30 grams of protein.

It's relatively cheap, it tastes good and nutritionally it can't be beat. Excellent option.

What I like about tilapia is it takes on flavors you use to season it well, without overpowering it like salmon. Salmon I can only eat a few times a month, the taste is so strong.

Tilapia, sturgeon, and catfish. Mmmmmmmmm. Those are the only fish I've tried that I enjoy eating. I guess I am a bottom feeder feeder.

Tilapia doesn't usually take too long to cook, but it does tend to have a fishy smell. But cost effectiveness is worth leaving your windows open for a while...

this is what u said. BUt im saying, there has to be a beginning to the chain. meaning there has to be, at some point, at the bottom of the food chain, some fish that ingest mercury by some means other than by eating other fish. thats all im saying
