i can't currently do a pull up at the moment and i've been doing negatives.
just a question, how does doing the negative part of a pull up help with the initial pull?
people say negatives are the best way to develop strength for the initial pull but i fail to understand how negatives help the pull.

You can lift more with a negative than the concentric. You are still targeting the same muscles with the eccentric (given you are actually fighting the descent), which in turn will eventually turn into enough strength to perform a concentric.

Negative pull ups are a waste of time and don't work for everyone IMO.
Just try and do as many reps as you can. Whether it's one or two pull-ups. Do 4 sets of however many reps you can currently do. Stick to that number until you feel you can do 1 more rep for a given set (which would most likely be the first set and so on and so forth as you get stronger). Eventually, you should be able to do 4 sets of 10 reps.
I would also suggest you doing the pull up exercise everytime you workout as the first exercise.Last edited by darklifter; 07-13-2010 at 04:29 PM.
