I have the same CPU cooler, CPU and mobo... I've had some serious trouble getting over 3.4ghz while staying under 70c after just 15 minutes of Orthos Small FFT. Have you done anything extra to reach those numbers or are you letting it run hotter?
Mind posting your voltages?
I may just let it run hot, seeing as I upgrade every 3 years or so anyways.

Just put in a AM3 Denab Phenom II X4 3.0ghz that i overclocked to 3.6 ghz using my new Asus M4A89TD Pro mobo
and
packing a Asus Radeon HD 5850 1gb overlcocked to something and advanced cooling.
the CPU is cooled by a Zalman 92mm fan
Since i overclocked it my temps are anywhere from 25-34 deg. C idle and under max load while gaming 45-55 deg. C.
graphics 7.7 Windows index
CPU 7.4
Memory (4gb DDR3 @ 1066 mhz) 7.5
i got like a 4700 score on the FF 14 benchmark on hi-res.
its a good benchmark to see where your system is currently.

Been running this for about 3 years:
Intel DP35DPM Socket 775 Motherboard
Intel Quad Core Kentsfield 2.4Ghz Q6600 CPU
Corsair TWINX 2x2048MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz E.P.P. (upgraded this year from 2x1gb)
XFX Radeon HD 5770 1GB PCIe DDR5(upgraded this year from GeForce 8600 GT 512MB)
Seagate 500GB Serial ATA HD 7200RPM
OCZ 700w GameXStream Power Supply
Have had no problems thus far. I plan on getting new mobo+cpu sometime in the next year or two, and a new HD when mine corrupts because seagates don't last too long. This PSU is kinda iffy too but I hope it lasts another few years.Last edited by Opies; 08-02-2010 at 08:41 PM.

What's up brosephs
Thinking of putting together a budget box for playing starcraft 2 and streaming hulu/netflix to my tv. The current p4 server/media pc I have hooked up does ok with regular HD video but stutters when streaming anything that uses flash.
Looking around I see a lot of people recommending i5 builds with a p55 based mobo and radeon 5770.
I'm wondering, since I'm only going to require up to 720p resolutions (my panasonic plasma is about 3-4 years old) can I get away with something cheaper?
Possibly a Phenom x2 that is unlocked to x4/overclocked on an AM3 board, and the 5770 or even less beefy video card?
I won't be doing any other gaming on the thing except for possibly diablo III since I tend to prefer consoles but I'm fairly sure it'll be based on the same engine as SC2. If not, I'll deal with it then.Diehard for Chicago and Illini sports

If you don't have about $800 to spend on CPU/Mobo/RAM/GPU then forget Intel. Spend the money on AMD and get a much better system. Only reason to get i5/i7 is if you REALLY want high end and have the cash to support it. I'd rather get an $99 AMD Quad and put more into the graphics card than spend $150 + $250 motherboard for intel.

I know this is mostly a custom build pc thread... but do you guys think this is a decent laptop (and price) for everyday use, and a bit of gaming (Starcraft 2, Team Fortress, Mass Effect 2, etc). Games dont have to be run maxed out, I just want 'good' graphics and mainly good framerate.
If you know of a better laptop, for the same price or cheaper, post it plz.

Could you recommend a tower and a cheaper video card?
My computer died and won't even boot up, so I guess it's time for a new one. Not sure if I'll build my own or buy one from Best Buy (only because I might need to go cheap for now and I have an available source of credit there).

oh bummer.
my last tower was the antec 900 which was great but i'm putting these new parts in my first tower which i bought in 2001-ish [actually, just put them in and i'm about to try and power it up]
as for a cheaper vid card, i guess it depends on what is cheap.
this looks ok and is $169

I'm about to just build a new PC. Video card died, ordered a new one, PC still crashes, but image is fine. Replaced mobo, original mobo was fine. Sent original video card in under warranty to EVGA. All voltages and temps are fine.
Currently installing win7 on a spare hdd and gonna fire up SC2 and see what happens. If it crashes again, prob will, I'm going to either get my video card replaced or just build a new pc and figure it out later. lol
Current pc is 2yrs old. I'm going to need one soon with school starting up too.
Looking at:
i7 930 w/ coolermaster v8 hs
asus p6x58d-e
6gb corsair xms ddr3 1600
antec 1200 case
corsair 850w modular psu
