    Squat Question.

I know this is a stupid question, but did anyone else get a pain on their back (upper/shoulders) when first squatting? I'm not using heavy weight, and I try move the bar as far back down my back as I can but it still doesn't seem to be in the correct place (according to Rippetoe's Starting Strength book.) I ignored the pain the past few workouts, just wanted to make sure it wasn't something that would hurt my training.

It should be resting on your traps, not your neck. You should feel a "pocket" that it fits into but if you don't why not ask someone experienced at your gym to help you out.

Yeah I read that in the book. I used to sit it up on my traps/neck, but when I lowered it this happened. Feels like its bruised, but it doesn't show it. But I'll just get someone to check my form, hopefully it helps.

It's impossible to help without video or seeing it in person but it could just be slight bruising from it being new. What are you squatting?

I was squatting 105 the first workout when the pain began. Today was 120 and the pain was still there, although I'm sure the extra weight didn't help much.

So you are 4 or 5 workouts in, I would assume any soreness would be gone or at least starting to go away by now. You either need to post a clear video or have someone at your gym help you. If your form is indeed bad you don't want to ignore it and keep adding weight.

Actually, I'm on my second workout. I started at 10% lower weight than my 5RM so I figured a 15 lb jump wouldn't hurt on squat. (Btw: I am doing Starting Strength.)

Oh, well in that case it may be that your body is just adjusting still and you are just sore but I still can't say for sure without seeing your form. Maybe just keep the jumps small for a while and see how you feel....getting a form critique is still my best advice though. /thread

Thanks for the help. I'll just see what happens in the next week or so, and find someone to check my form lol.
