If you are good at calculus, analytic thinking and problem solving, it shouldn't be that bad unless you are dumber than a bag of rocks.

Pretty hard, but not as hard as Electrical Engineering IMO.

If you have a solid understanding of math, its not too bad.

Wouldn't say you needed a solid understanding of math, if you know how to use a calculator then your pretty much sorted.

So, go take all the engineering math classes.........

    .........do well

Then, you are good to go? The degree gets easier after the core math/physics classes?

The hell years are your sophomore and junior year. Freshman year is easy because you are taking core classes while your final year revolved around your senior design project and stuff.

But yes, generally it does get easier after you take your thermo, thermal fluid systems, statics, solids ect.

    So, from what I gather:

If Calculus isn't easy for you, don't even try.

Yeah you could say that. It doesn't necessarily have to be easy, you just have to be able to do it.

If you can do trigonometry then you should be able to do it. Calculus has very little to do with actual engineering, 99% of the time you are working with known quantities or if you don't know then you can find out by asking a question.

IMO year 1 is really easy, year 2 is okay, and years 3/4 are hard. Obviously in 3rd/4th year, when you're taking your advanced classes, it will be harder. There isn't anything hard about calculus, intro thermo, intro statics, intro dynamics, intro design etc. that you take in 1st 2 years.

yeah but if you can't understand calculus you basically aren't smart enough for the hard mec e classes. calculus is easy (with the exception of partial differential equations). Most of the calculus used in mec e application, however, is just basic integration and maybe differentiation.

    Two seperate difficulties

Mechanical engineering doesn't involve memorizing like med school might.

    words that is

Dunno bout that. I wouldn't say you use it a ton, depends what branch you are in etc.

Likes of structural analysis you might use it more than something like fracture mechanics or cae.

If you are doing dynamics or structures then yeah you will calculus alot, it isn't like that heavy though, not like maths or something though.

So, what makes the degree so difficult?

sometimes it's more the work load and assignment/exam difficulty as opposed to the taught material.

You really need a broad knowledge to be good at it.

Mechanical engineering is like a combination of computer modelling, maths, physics, business and chemistry and you need to be good at all of those things to really be fully fledged in the subject.

If you are generally clever and have common sense then I'd recommend it though. Almost guaranteed a job at the end of it and engineering is one of the fastest growing fields at the moment. (in the UK anyway).

Hard degree. You learn alot of off the wall type math stuff, like calculating the forces in a marble. It seems easy but when you have to look at the wind resistance, the friction, the rolling forces etc...it gets a big confusing and complicated.

Not terrible, but definitely one of the harder undergrad majors. For me, heat transfer and fluid dynamics were the worst classes. I'm very good at math and a quick learner and it was still challenging. Then again I'm incapable of studying, so if you do have that skill, it'd be easier for you I think. You better be good at/like calculus because you'll use it almost daily.

at least with me problem with electrical was that i couldn't see the result and visualize what was really going on. at least with mechanical i could see what was going on which help my understanding immensely.

you can still do the course if you aren't good at maths. My maths modules are my lowest scoring, whilst im getting 80-85% in all fluids and thermo stuff (2nd year). just have to have a bit of intelligence about you. You can get by without being a pro in calc easily; just by picking modules and exam questions that don't rely on it.
