I trained for a while and then quit due to a lot of issues, most of which being BJJ... I know it's a great form of self-defense, but I hated it. Grappling classes always left me feeling horrible... striking and muay thai, on the other hand... still wish I was doing it. I also wish more women participated in combat sports.

Combat Sports
BJJ is one of my favorites, tho training is out at the moment due to finances. I have however compete in Karate years ago and gold metaled at every tournament. I also had the privelage to go to a national Tae Kwon Do tournament and compete. Not so well in sparring department due to the sheer number of fantastic athletes there, but I got a gold at nationals for forms.
I have a black belt in the two standups, and yes I earned them. 5 years a piece and lots of broken knuckles, nose bones, footbones, twisted ankles, sweat and tears along the way. BJJ i am only a blue belt but I love it because it challenges my mind, flexibility, and conditioning. I fully support and advocate women being in the ring, and I personally believe the guys don't want us in there because they're afraid of being shown up or beaten by one of us (in the cycling world we call that "Chicked").

This. Except for the extra respect thing... since once you start rolling you don't really notice whether you're rolling with a guy or a girl. It's just another teammate that's training with you.
Haha. Bruises are par for the course though, and I'm gotten marked up in the face a few times (gi-burns and whatnot).
Awesome!
I don't know if that's always the case but I am jealous that women tend to be more flexible.

I would think boxing would be better to avoid close contact (I specify boxing because even kicks can backfire).
But I would think if a woman is fighting off a sexual attack, the last thing she would want to do is roll in the ground with the guy trying to rape her.
For the specific purpose of self defense, I would advocate boxing primarily, and jiu-jitsu as a backup. I really don't think one art is enough anyway.

The mainstream MMA female fighter scene is not that big because it's not promoted in the UFC and let's face it, Dana has made MMA mainstream.
If you ever frequent some decently popluated citys like Vegas, you'd see that Amatuer level female MMA is pretty common and there's some serious competition out there.

Any gal who follows, watches, participates in, trains for or has done MMA/UFC is 100% cool in my book! They can see through the BS all the other women see it for and appreciate for what it is as an athletic event, entertainment feature and bad ass sport if I ever saw one!
Props to all the gals who enjoy all that is MMA! I salute you!UNBA Men's Physique Athlete
