I'm just now learning to pull sumo and that has been my experience as well. If it comes up off of the floor it's going to get locked out. But, there is no guarantee that it's coming up off of the floor. I know that if the bar is on a two inch box my sumo is far heavier than if the bar is on the floor.....disproportionately so.
I thought of the same thing. Trying to do sumos while standing on a box.....but it better be one wide box.
I'd be happy to listen to anyones advice for increasing sumo deadlift strength from the floor.

i also have the same problem (off the floor)
i have been trying pulling from a deficit lately
i stand on weight plates as the boxes at my gym ar no where near wide enough as somone mentioned
those step arobics things that stack also work, but they slide to easy
so far i love the deficit pulls, i guess ill find out how much they are helping in a days here

When i had trouble breaking the weight off the floor I incorporated deficit deadlifts and they definitely helped. I stepped on one of those aerobic boxes they have laying around the gym and just pulled off of that. After a few months my speed off the ground was great and had no trouble with heavier weights.

When I used to have problems pulling off the floor I tried everything including deficits to increase my off the floor strength. The thing that helped my off the floor strength the most is reseting every single lift I do. I stopped TnG altogether and made sure I brought each lift to a dead stop.
I rep back
Current lifts
515/325/555 - gym lifts
bench with a pause
deep squat
