I know that in professional cage and especially boxing ring fights that strength doesn't play a big role in fighting, but I will focus on street and amateur fights.
Common sense says that strength DOES matter in most fights. Take an extremely buff guy and an extremely skinny guy, who do you think will win? Take an average 5'9" 180 lbs guy and another 5'9" 125 pound guy who do you think will win? That's why fights have weight class, because heavy people are generally much stronger since they usually have more muscle, and they carry around more weight creating more muscle/strength.
I remember when I used to be about 5'7ish and 110 pounds and my older brother was about 5'10" and about 200 pounds. He used to kick my ass easily. But when I began to build muscle, and workout and ate more I gained weight, and was able to kick HIS fat ass. That's one of the reasons why men are able to beat up females 9 out of 10 times. Its because men are generally stronger, not because men are innately able to use good fighting technique. When I was around 8 my sister who was 4 years older than me used to be able to beat me, but when I got older I was able to beat up my sister since I gained strength, not because my fighting skilled improved.
When it comes to fighting for fun (at home usually with siblings or friends) or street fights, generally speaking strength does matter quite a bit, its not the only thing that matters, or the main thing, but it does matter somewhat.
