Lots of unawareness in this thread.
Former philosophy major here, current lawyer. A good number of people I went to law school with were philosophy majors....
Why is it good to major in philosophy? You attain skill at reading, comprehending, analyzing, arguing, seeing different perspectives, playing devil's advocate... are you telling me you can learn that in the commerce school?
You apply to any job with an employer who is not a robot, and they will respect the fact that you were a philosophy major. They know you should be able to adapt to any task thrown at you, that you are a competent writer, and that you have a desire to learn and explore, rather than a desire to be told the answers.

For you philosophy haters out there, the problem is you're focusing on the things in life that don't really matter. When I was a kid I had hopes and dreams. We all did. But over time, the daily grind gets in the way and you miss the things that really matter, even though they are right in front of you, staring you in the face. I think the next time you should ask yourself "Am I on the right track here?". I don't mean to be rude but people like you I really pity. So maybe you could use the few brain cells you have and take advantage of the knowledge I have given you now. Good luck.

To me, philosophy is about being open minded to possibilities, especially in areas like existentialism. I hear all these different theories on life, ethics, love, etc, and I make my own theories based on either a mix of these theories or the opposite of some of these theories.
Philosophy has made me realize what in life is actually important... nothing.
Plus if you can combine fields of philosophy, your ideas evolve. If you can apply logic to existentialism, you become wise. That's basically my goal: wisdom/enlightenment

There's a difference. You become a history major, you are learning about "what happened". If you are an english major, you are learning about convoluted means of expression. If you become an art history major, you just memorize a bunch of useless stuff.
The difference is that philosophy is most prone to application in the real world.

My cousin is a philosophy major. It has really effected him bad. He doesn't shower, or wear deodorant. I always ask him why and he says hes rebelling against the ways of society. He is fat and shaves once every month. Does not brush teeth, and has no friends. He says he is his own person living to his own standards. He told me one day I will understand.
It would have been easier to take the shrooms and get a degree in something else. I guarantee u one shroom trip can teach u more then anything any professor can teach.
EDIT: I guarantee u the major philosophers all had mental problems. Most of them were usually depressed and such. Others were probably mentally ill.

lol, seriously? I can think of a bout 500 things you can't do with a philosophy degree and only a few things you can do with one. I'm not bashing it, though. I enjoy the art of philosophy, although, I hated most of the idiots we studied. If someone wants that for a major, more power to them, but don't pretend it has such a broad field of usefulness.
