I recently got injured three weeks ago lifting, at one point it was horrible just going from sitting to standing up the pain shot from my left glutes down to my feet almost knocking me over. Everyday is pretty hard just putting my socks on to go to work, I llstened to the doc and stopped lifting and they prescribed me meds for the pain but I feel they've made me complacent. I have stretched in in the three weeks and i'm glad to say the pain is not completely gone but it still hurts my quality of life, I haven't been eating/stretching it as much this past week... would anyone have any recommendations on what i should do, i'm really sick of this pain.

I did the same thing about a year ago, deadlifting with bad form which was stupid
Initially I went to a physio and he gave me stretches etc to do and said rest it. However it never really fixed itself and i went back to lifting (no longer deadlift) and just bearing the pain
Then i took 3-4 months of lifting, now it is reasonable, i can put shoes/socks on and pick up things from the ground.
However i still feel it pulling a little and do regular stretching etc to help it along. I'm constantly aware of it and always careful not to lift heavy things (above 20kg) without bending my legs fully

sup sciatic nerve pain brahs,
was gonna start my own advice thread for this - and probably still will - but might as well respond to you guys first...i've suffered from sciatica for the past 9 months - went from hardly noticable to bearable to noticeably uncomfortable to excrutiating and now it's back at aroundbearable and improving (i think) due to some exercises i've been doing.
long story short my body was unaligned for the longest time from my treeplanting job (leaning to the right, my shovel hand) and the straw that broke the camel's back was a deadlifting motion with improper form (wasn't lifting weights but was trying to haul a super heavy chain out of a pit)
ok i gotta restart my comp but i'll be back in a bit...in the meantime check this out:

I've dealt with Sciatica for the past 4 years.
Like mentioned above, its basically caused by SEVERE "Muscle Imbalances/Uneven Body". Stretches definitely keep it at bay, but its NOT THE CURE!
I took over 2 years off from the gym and I just started going to ehg y magain this past January. Even though I have started going to the gym, I still cant workout my lower body...not yet at aleast. I have done tons/tons of research, seen/talked to a lot of specialist. The concept goes like this and I can elaborate more through PM if needed.
Your muscle imbalances are caused from years of bad posture/lifestyle choices. One good way to diagnose your problems is to stand w/ shorts on(that are short enough to show your knees) and take pictures of ur self from every side(front/back/2 sides) and keep in mind to take these pictures WITHOUT trying to stand with good posture...just stand how you would normally stand w/out exerting any effort in doing so. Then draw horizontal lines through your shoulders, hips, knees, ankles and also draw a line vertically down the center. Again, keep the lines perfectly horizontal and perfectly vertical so you know where the "uneveness" comes from. This should give you a good idea of where ur body needs work and you can take it from there. Again, draw these lines on EVERY picture.
In my case, my head/shoulders are leaning forward so I need to correct that. My left shoulder is significantly higher than my right one. Also, I am leaning slightly forward...so once you do the corrective exercises/stretches to fix that, it'll solve the problem.
Try to keep running to a minimum b/c that will aggravate the pain and try to lower the weight on ur lower body. In my case, b/c of the uneveness, if I try squatting or d.lifts, the sciatica comes back 10 fold.
Hope this helps!
Edit: This is usually the cause of sciatica but it can also be caused by bulged/ruptured disc etc, in which case, weak pain meds wont work and you'll feel it! Worth getting and MRI to rule out those options, highly recommend it!

good advice above.
anyways you should go to a physio and they'll let you know what your issue is. if you injured your back bending forward, back bends should relieve the pain, and if you injured it bending back forward bends are the answer. usually. simple..
the main exercises i do are the upward facing dog yoga pose - i hold this for 5-10 minutes and then do the nerve gliding exercises followed by that soccer stretch where you just pull your foot to your butt cheek while standing with your knee pointing downards to the ground. i do this 3x per day followed by a 1 hr walk.
the more activity you do, the better your sciatica will get usually. i planted again this summer, with sciatica, using the same hand, and although i ****ed it up worse long term because i was making my body even more unaligned, it barely bothered me at all out there because i was working 10+ hours a day constantly moving.
sitting all day is the worse thing you can do. lying on my stomach right now is pretty much the only pain free position i have left lol.
anyways there's a ton of threads on here about it, just search "sciatica" for threads and you'll find plenty. good luck brahs.

I've had this for the past 5+ years. Disc herniation (L4/L5/S1). I've done the chiropractor, acupuncturist, pain meds, physical therapy, rest, anti-inflammatory, special steroids, injections into the spine (epidural & selective nerve block), and surgery (micro lumbar disectomy). None have worked for me. I feel your pain. For some people the shots followed by physical therapy work. Also, for most, sciatic pain heals itself after about 5 weeks average...3 months at the most. Unless you have disc issues and such like me.
I've been in pain everyday for the past 5+ years. I'm at the point where nothing has worked and I'm fed up.
My advice is to get an MRI and go from there. If they can't see anything "physically" wrong (ie moved disc), then it should heal itself if you listen to your body and the doctors advice. Don't force anythingLast edited by Pkenns822; 07-24-2010 at 01:00 PM.

hey I am constant pain for the past 3 yrs due to a badly bulging disk and bilateral pars defects. I have sciatica all the way to my feet and also terrible weakness and back pain. Have you tried traction where they pull you apart? That has worked for my dad and all of his friends with disk issues so they are in NO pain at all. I am going to get it later this week it takes a few sessions to see a difference but good luck. I have been to pain management specialists and everything. I hate taking meds for pain so I just ice my back every day many times during the day and use these lidocaine patches on my back that help a lot too.

It amazes me how many people this actually affects.
I got diagnosed with PS about a month ago although i had the symptoms for almost close to a year only that as painful until about a month ago when the pain just basically debilitated me for a few days.
I got some ibuprofin for the inflammation and muscle relaxers for the muscle spasms.
Although the pain meds do luckily work im currently taking 16 pils a day and am afraid im doing more harm then good.
This is such a pain in the butt literally its like nothing ive ever felt,i wouldnt wish this upon my worst enemy to be honest. The lvl of discomfort is off the charts.'Cause sometimes you feel tired,
feel weak, and when you feel weak, you feel like you wanna just give up.
But you gotta search within you, you gotta find that inner strength
and just pull that **** out of you and get that motivation to not give up
and not be a quitter, no matter how bad you wanna just fall flat on your face and collapse.

try those stretches i mentioned above...upward facing dog especially. i've been doing it consistently 3x a day for 5+ min holds each time and it helps tremendously. also practice circular breathing while holding the position. my body starts vibrate when i combine these 2 things, it's intense...and the pain has subsided so much. give it a shot...
circular breathing: it's easy...
"Just about inhaling down ur chest into ur balls and feeling that energy go down the front of ur body adn into ur balls...and then exhaloing back up ur spine and into ur brain. While u are circulating the air in and out down the front of ur body and up the back. U try to channel that energuy down the front of ur body into ur balls and back up ru spine into ur brain. At first I found it hard to "feel" this energy but just by breahting like this and imaging energy flow in this way, after enough practise i can feel this energy. If ur confused google circular breathing meditation."
took me a few days to get the hang of the breathing but it's worth it. just keep at it.
