Protein shake first thing in the morning?

Do you feel it makes sense to get a protein shake with some simple carbs just like after a workout as your first meal of the day?
Get those starving muscles some quick help....

Oatmeal half milk half water, 1 scoop whey half milk half water, half a carton of egg whites, 1 or 2 full eggs, then my multi, caffeine, flax seed pill, omega 3-6-9, maybe some arginine.

    Solid for me.

There is no reason to go out of your way and seek out "simple" carbs (which I assume you are referring to high GI carbs) just because it is your first meal of the day. Same with post workout - no need to seek out high GI carbs. Oatmeal would be a fine carb choice for either meal.

Frozen no sugar added mixed berries, two scoops of vanilla protein, and some water. In the blender and mix it up.
Half a bagel with cream cheese. Darn good start to the day.

    This.

Unless you eat like an anorexic girl, in most cases your body isn't "starving" when you wake up. Sure, the body's in a more catabolic state compared to say the night before when you've got x good meals in you, but the body itself is still working it's way through your (hopefully) high caloric diet.

To answer the OP, i do eggs + oats (blended, then cooked as protein pancakes) for Meal 1's when i don't have to go train an early client/s, and i do whey + oats (blended) for when i do have to do early morning sessions. Purely for convinience. I prefer food whenever physically possible. I just save whey for after gym, that's it.

As someone said above - forget the protein shakes in the morning.

Eat solid food - oatmeal with eggs is by far the best choice. If you care about protein shake in the morning, put 1-2 scoops in the oatmeal, but don't forget the eggs.

I drink a protein shake right when I wake up, but I am also working on cutting weight... so I don't have a high calorie diet for my body to work on during the night.

Im definately going to try this 'proatmeal' idea.

You could also just make regular pancakes and add protein powder to the batter along with whatever goodies you want like flax, oatmeal, etc.

I'm all about solid food too, although on Fridays I do start with a protein shake early morning, then eat more 2 hours later. For the most part of the work week when I wake up, I first have 2 scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, 100% whole wheat bread w/olive oil butter and 2 cups of skim milk w/fat free chocolate syrup. It's a power packed start to the day! Then, I follow up with a mid morning protein shake to keep the protein charge going.

Does protein powder go bad when you cook it or fry in a pan?
