My advice during a cut is to go as long as you can cold turkey. When you break down and decide to drink, make it whiskey, drink heavy not light. Drink about a half a bottle. The next morning your stomach, not used to eating much let alone hard alcohol in massive doses, will feel like such hell that you'll vomit everywhere and have one of the worst days of your life.

You won't want to drink again for quite some time. Problem solved. Eat some quaker oats and go back to bed.

This is actually a good idea. When i was drinking for the first time my counselor kept feeding me alcohol and pushing me drinks. The next morning when i woke up feeling like death and still quite drunk I asked him why on earth he would do such a thing, i could've died. He told me so that i'd respect alcohol's power and learn moderation if not outright never drink again. lol

    I didn't learn my lesson :\

Not going to take alcohol advice from someone not old enough to drink. In general, I don't take any advice from anyone not old enough to drink.

Me like beer no affect brain. What question ?

Beer's the thing that's been hardest for me to give up, but I've never been a heavy drinker.
I just like craft beer, especially IPA's, but one is to satisfy the craving ( I've never been into DRUNK)

I shoot for Friday and Saturday nights now, and try to fit it into my macros, but generally,
there are health benefits to moderate consumption ( as I under stand it).

Most people that are asking 'can I drink' seem to drink excessively and want someone to tell them "sure, it's ok"

On the other hand, "all work and no beer make homer go crazy'
"The two kinds of people, on earth I mean, are the people who lift and the people who lean."

    I am having a dilemma.

I have been on a program in its second week. Going real well.

However I have a "beer festival" Friday, and one of my best friends' bachelor party the following Saturday.

Socially, I am pretty much committed to going to these and having some beers.

What I plan on doing is planning the entire day's nutrition the day before. I am going to try to land my calorie intake right where it is for my program.... including the beer I drink. I am going to pack most of my days' food as close to the events as possible. Im also going to put a cap on my number of drinks and spread them out.

I really have to be careful. Im on a pretty good roll and this is a good way to have a couple terrible days and reverse some hard work. Its also possible to completely fall off the program mentally.

It's possible. DO NOT SWEAT FALLING OFF.

It happens to everyone eventually (I was one of those guys who would scoff @ cheating claiming infinite motivation. Hunger is a primal instinct, hard to ignore) .

Good to put a cap. Be sure you get minimum protein requirement. It's not a bad idea what you're doing so gjdm. Special events like this don't happen every day or even every month (and if they do you're doing something wrong lol)

Holy crap mods actually cleaned this thread up. GJDM(ods) !! Thanks. Now i can go back to being substantially altruistic and donating my time to those in need ! (kidding, not THAT self-absorbed)

Alcohol is the only drug that puts on fat. If you can handle drugs recreationally, go ahead and smoke a joint, or blow some lines. Totally fat free, and high as a kite.

Alcohol does not put on fat. Your body can't convert alcohol into fat. You just don't burn fat until all of the alcohol is burned off. People get fat from drinking because they eat before all the alcohol is burned off and none of that food is being burned, the alcohol is because the body prioritizes burning it.

    alcahol

Assuming tank is 1/2 inch thick on all sides (incl top), volume of cylinder is approximately ~1110.67277 cubic feet (~31 450.750 liters)

Alcohol = calories that dehydrate you and make you hungry

Drink all you want, just make up for it by creating a big deficit..

    bad for muscle growth/protein synthesis->yes
    bad for cutting-> yes

is losing fat and drinking doable ==yes
unless your entering a contest, there's no reason you should put off having fun and going crazy.

I have friends that drink 4-5 days a week, smoke weed and work out. They look lean and athletic (IMO what most women like). I agree that it's pretty stupid to train for mega gains if your a constant party goer. From studies, Alcohol seems to be a big no no, but unless you're trying to compete, all this obsessive behavior kind of takes away from having fun in your life for a lot of people.
On a side note, I really do believe that Body Building can turn people's lives around that are effected by Drugs and Alcohol simply because of the obsessive behavior and strive to better ones self physically -- and mentally.

    Contradicting? lol

    Hypothetical situation:

I eat 200g protein the night before. The day of, I eat 100g protein in the morning. (also some fats in there, but maybe 50gmax) fast until party

    FASTED

That night, I show up, have 5 shots (~500Cals with water and lime) (BAC 0 in 10 hours)

Fasted = high asborption rate = less alchohol for desired effect (?)

Wake up next morning, drink some water/tea/black coffee (0 cal)

by noon the next day, any calories consumed should be used efficiently.

    Dis right here!

Brb gotten drunk every single weekend for the last 3 months. Down from 196 to 190. Read leangains article. It works. NO drunk food though. Slows progress, but doesn't halt. Enjoy life and college.

Funny you mention Miller Lite as this is the beer I drink because of the low 96 cals per 12 oz. Simple equation... Calories in and calories out

I'm a calorie counting freak and nothing changes when I go out with friends or on a date. Usually I'll know ahead of time and keep my calories low until the evening when I have my big meal. Once out and about I'll keep track of each drink via the calculator in my phone and MyFitnessPal. I'll leave myself between 500-700 cals to blow on drinks. It's cool because in a way it keeps you from getting sloppy drunk but coming home after drinking and not eating can be hard. That's when I'll just go to sleep.

I'll usually keep the cal intake the day after below avg, too. Knock on wood haven't had a week where I haven't lost weight yet.

Question is asked a lot particularly on this forum:

The answer is usually "calories in calories out" and for 99.99% of people on this forum this holds true for every other question but alcohol is a little different.

With regards to body building, the objective of which is to gain lean mass, spare lean mass, and reduce body fat (and/or maintain a low percentage of body fat), alcohol is one of the worst, if not the worst, things you can introduce to your body.

This is what happens when you drink:

Some alcohol is absorbed in the stomach. The amount of food in your stomach, the slower the digestion. Carbonating alcohol beverages slightly increases the absorption rate. Some people are just better. Rest goes to small intestine where it gets absorbed. This really is not the important part.

Once alcohol is in your bloodstream, digestion happens in the liver. I'm not going into chemical details, I hate to sound degrading but most people can't understand wavelength's sticky so i doubt anyone gives a hoot about some biochemistry. Basically it gets converted to a toxic compound that releases NADH (a different, highly critical metabolic compound used mostly in moving hydrogen around). NADH and it's oxidized equivalent NAD are kept in a controlled ratio in the cell to maintain proper functioning. Why does this matter to anyone?

Alcohol creates an imbalance. Too much NADH relative to NAD levels fks stuff up, i'm not going to delve into the myriad of problems that are created by alcohol, i'm not anti-alcohol I promise. What we're interested in is the fact that too much NADH shifts metabolism to promote fat molecule synthesis and inhibit breakdown of fats in the liver. It's almost like it was created as an anti-bodybuilding supplement. This directly contradicts objective #3, to reduce body fat and/or maintain a low percentage of body fat. Btw if you don't care about bodybuilding, read the big letters at the waay top left of the page, then click the x at the top right of your screen.

Now, we're done talking about that. It's waay more complicated but the cliffs of that last paragraph is alcohol = more fat created + less fat burned = bad.

Alcohol has some other nasty effects on the body. I'm going to go into less detail then i did above but to sum it up, it will reduce the absorption and levels of some key vitamins and minerals, will dehydrate your muscles, and will absolutely destroy protein synthesis as well as nutrient uptake in muscles. This contracts our other objectives, to create and maintain desired levels of lbm.

What it does to your hormones is unclear some studies are showing it reduces test levels over time some show theres a large spike during followed by low periods afterwards, i'm not really sure it matters in the long run. If anyone wants to point me in the right direction, i might take a look (assload of calc homework tonight so probably not).

But we head back to the original question (Scroll up if you forgot luls). With alcohol, because it's not processed as a carbohydrate or a fat or a protein, calories in vs calories out only loosely applies. DOES THAT MATTER? Well ask yourself: "Self, do you really want to go drinking tonight?" If the answer is yes go drink. If the answer is maybe, get off the damn fence. If the answer is no, don't drink. Honestly, deprivation is the stepping stone to long term diet non-adherence. Which leads to no progress. Which leads to stupid questions on the bb forums. No one here can answer that question for you.

    edit: In b4 age:19 status:Non-drinker
GLASS, and I emphasize "glass" of red wine has negligible effects on protein synthesis, not to mention many health benefits. Controlled intake of red wine weekly or even daily will not noticeably hinder gains/increase fat on a bulk (if the wine fits in calories).

On a proper cut you would like to avoid alcohol all together unless you have like a MASSIVE event and it would be considered MORE THAN seriously anti-social to not drink.
