    600$ Budget - what should I get?

So I've been going to the gym for 2 years, subscription costs like 300 a year. Now I've realized, why the hell don't I just use that money to set up a gym in my basement instead? My gym closes way too early on weekends and closes for retarded holidays no one cares about. My subscription ends soon, so instead of renewing it for 300$, I'm gonna make myself a home gym with my dad. We'll both invest 300$ so that's a total of 600$.

So what should we be able to get with that? My dad was talking about a machine that's all-in one that costs over 600, but I'm not sure what machine that is and if it's worth it. What do you guys think? Is 600 enough to get all we should need? Also, I have a cheap bench I used to use before but it says the max weight we can lift on it is 150. Is it that the bench can't support more than that or is it the crappy plastic bar that comes with it?

I'd definitely look into maybe a 300lb+ olympic barbell weight-set (I got one new for $300)...

    (45lb. bar + 45's / 35's / 25's / 10's / 2 sets of 5's / 2.5's)

With this you can do your major movements such as..

    -squats
    -deads
    -presses
    -rows

Then probably an adjustable bench (incline/flat/decline)... a simple rack for squats.. and a variety of dumbells (don't forget to have a few lighter ones for shoulder isolation exercises and arm exercises-- they're not just for presses).

A weight tree/rack would be useful down the road to hold your weights but that is not exactly necessary.

This is what I would do..

If you buy used stuff.. I'm sure $600 could get you close to all if not all of this...

This...buy used and get a good power rack and bench...then if money is an issue look for a cheap oly 300lbs set either on craigslist or at play it again sports. Thats alll you need in the beginning...buy more as needed.

$300 for 300lbs weight set? Wow have prices really shot up that much? I bought mine a few years ago for $100 from sports authority.

    Search Craigslist and be patient

    I bought the following:
Powerline Power Rack = $200 (not the best rack in the world, but will do what you need it to.
    300# Oly Weight set = $100
Power Block Sport Bench = $100
    Additional 360#s of Oly Plates = $150

So for $550 I have all the basics that I need.

I do have a 44lb Kettlebell that I paid $60 for and some home made equipment (bulgarian bag, tire sled....Oh, I do have a 100# heavy bag too).

But $600 budgeted right should set you up pretty well.

The only thing I would recomend budgeting in for (or making) is some kind of weight tree. I have yet to do either and it pisses me off...lol.

If you're short on cash you can always do what I did. Buy and resell items on Craigslist and use that money to buy what you want. I bought all of the following items below with funds I made from buying and selling on CL. I paid nothing out of my pocket. I got a Powertec power rack, hoist FID bench, Nautilus FID bench, Ivanko Dumbbells from 5-95lb with 2 3tier racks, Tuff Stuff leverage cable gym, Parabody leg press hack squat, 600 pounds of olympic plates, Tricep bar, curl bar, Life Fitness Elliptical, Airdyne, preacher bench,Parabody inverted ab board etc. I accumulated all of this in just a few months. If you want to know more in detail what I did, PM me.

Damn. I'd like to see a pic of all that. Sounds like a sweet setup.

Flipping is definitely a good means of helping pay for your gear, but it takes time and some learning (and access to a truck). Think of your equipment as an investment. For instance, I've paid about $2500 into my home gym (CL finds) and I'm sure I will get at least $2500 if I ever choose to sell it. Buy cheap, sell for what you got it for (or hopefully for more). With a gym membership, you're renting; with a home gym, you own and can therefore sell.

When flipping on craigslist, always include a hot body picture.

squat rack with low and high pulley and pull up bar
300lb olympic weight set plus bar
    FID bench

all used from CL will prob be right in the 600 range... then you can add some powerblock or ironmaster dumbbells in the future for the all around basic home gym set up..
