Do I have to refrigerate tuna? Bought 40 cans

I just bought 40 cans of tuna and they weren't in the cold section in the store. I've always refrigerated them, but since the store doesn't do it, why should I?

Not necessary. Canned tuna only needs to be refrigerated after it's opened.

No, non perishable food items, canned, in the shelved area are not kept cold because they don't need to be until opened.

Why would you put it in a plastic container? I mean, I've heard of this, but haven't really delved into the science behind it.

Something to do with the "tin" once it has been opened?

As long as I can remember mum always said to make sure its in a plastic container she wont even store cat/dog food in tin once opened!!

Just found this on food safety.

Don't store food in an opened tin can, or re-use empty cans to cook or store food. This is because when a can has been opened and the food is open to the air, the tin from the can might transfer more quickly to the can's contents.

This advice doesn't apply to foods sold in cans that have resealable lids, such as golden syrup and cocoa, because these types of food don***8217;t react with the can.
